SHS-Ateneo Off to SBP Passerelle National Finals
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu seeks to defend its national Passerelle championship as it plays in the national finals of the Milo-backed BEST SBP/Passerelle Twin Tournament 2011 this weekend at the Xavier School Gym in San Juan, Metro Manila.
The Magis Eagles, who won a fifth straight Passerelle championship for Cebu and a fourth straight ...Visayas Regional championship this year, is looking for back-to-back titles in the longest running tournament for the Under 15 age bracket. Now on its 26th season as a national-level tournament, the SBP Passerelle games bring together regional champions of Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila. Expected to give SHS-AdC its biggest challenge is its own brother school and 2010 runner-up Xavier School which will also have the advantage of hosting the games. Mindanao will also be a threat with perennial powerhouse Holy Child School of Davao, while Guagua National Colleges will represent Luzon.
Expected to lead the Magis Eagles are Under 15 players Dawn Hynric Ochea, Rendell Senining, Dave Yu, Bro Catan, Laeil Medalle, Miguel Competente and Jarek Mercado. Support will be coming from their younger players like 14 year old Jair Igna and 13 year old freshman Janjan Jaboneta. The Passerelle division calls for a team to have seven Under-15 players, six Under-14 players and two Under-13 players. The team is eyeing a credible performance to somehow make up for the loss of its Juniors team in the recently concluded CESAFI championship series.
In the Small Basketeers Philippines division, St. John’s Institute of Bacolod will carry the colors of the Visayas and will face stiff competition from Lourdes School of Mandaluyong which dethroned four-peat SBP national champions Ateneo de Manila. Mindanao champion Ateneo de Davao will seek to better its runner-up finish last year under Coach Henry Asilum, the father of SHS-AdC’s Renzar Henry Asilum. International School of Better Beginnings (ISBB) of Lucena represents Luzon.
Format of this weekend tournament for both divisions will be a round robin classification phase with the top two teams facing off in for the championship. Each team will have to play two games on both Saturday and Sunday.
