Cebu teams UC, SWU gear up for Sweet 16 of Philippine Collegiate Champions LeagueBy Jonas Panerio

    7:23 am | Friday, November 11th, 2011

After engaging in one of the most intriguing finals in recent memory, the two-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the runners-up Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras are slated to meet again in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League, which is already underway at The Arena in San Juan.

The two squads are already seeded in the Sweet 16 by virtue of their slots in the recently concluded Cesafi finals. They are Cebu’s only representatives from the Cesafi in the tournament and are located on different sides of the bracket.

However, if all goes according to plan, the two squads will meet again in the Elite Eight portion of the competition with the winner advancing to the Final Four, where UAAP champion Ateneo and NCAA champion San Beda await.

But before that, the Webmasters and the Cobras must hurdle separate opponents. SWU is slated to take on the champion of the Visayas qualifers, which will pit the champions of Iloilo, Bacolod, Tacloban, Bohol and Ormoc against one another. UC waits for the Mindanao qualifier. Games will be played at the Ormoc Superdome on Nov. 29 and 30.

Meanwhile, in the Metro Manila qualifiers, the National University Bulldogs, playing without UAAP MVP, Ray Parks Jr., hurdled the NAASCU champions University of Manila, 103-74.

Center Emmanuel Mbe led the Sweet 16 bound Bulldogs with 29 points. Already in the Sweet 16 are San Sebastian, Adamson, Jose Rizal University, Far Eastern University, Letran and the University of Sto. Tomas.

PCCL: Archers, Bulldogs advance to the Sweet 16

MANILA, Philippines— De La Salle and National U proved too strong for their respective foes Thursday to advance to the Sweet 16 of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Archers, looking to bounce back after failing to make the Final Four in the UAAP, repulsed the Centro Escolar University Scorpions, 79-51, after the Bulldogs ovewhelmed the University of Manila Hawks, 103-74, to reach the stepladder Sweet 16 opposite the South Luzon champions.

The Archers forged a duel with Northern/Central Luzon champion University of North Philippines on Nov. 19. The winner will face Jose Rizal U.

Emmanuel Mbe fired a game-high 29 points for the Bulldogs, who were hardly troubled even without reigning UAAP MVP Bobby Ray Parks, who has opted to focus with the National team in the ongoing Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

Reden Celda also sparkled with 14 points, while guards Cedric Labing-isa and Joshua Alolino combined for 20 markers.

The Hawks came within 43-50 on Jeff Viernes’ triple, before Celda fired five straight points to spark the breakaway for the Bulldogs, who built a 73-57 lead heading into the final period.

Playing their second game under new coach Gee Abanilla, the Archers unleashed a balanced attack against the MNCAA champion Scorpions with five players led by Joshua Webb and Almond Vosotros hitting at least nine points. Is Mark Jayven Tallo playing? Murag wala pa?

UAAP champion Ateneo and NCAA titlist San Beda already clinched berths to the semifinals.

Newly minted CESAFI champions University of Cebu has already qualified to the Sweet 16, along with Cebu runner-up Southwestern U.

Also assured of Sweet 16 berths are UAAP teams Far Eastern U, Adamson and University of Santo Tomas as well as NCAA squads San Sebastian and Letran.

Sayang lang that because I think that means Mary will only have 2 years of eligibility left when he finally suits up, 7 years out of HS rule? When did he graduate HS, 2007 ba?
lageh, nahurot na lang hinuon iyang playing years..nag school hopping..he was considered by Ateneo, ni practice sa UST dayon ni enrol sa FEU, tapos nibalik USC karon tua napod sa Adamson. I actually adviced his stepdad Roger before nga mag UST na lang kay during that time when he was fresh out of HS ma lineup sya dayon kay di kaayo kusug ang UST ato. But I think, they listened to somebody else

I think Pearce left HS in SY 2008-2009. So the 7 years out of HS rule will kick-in by SY 2015-2016?

2009-2010 = with FEU (I remember seeing him near the UC bench during the UC-UE PCCL match in 2009)
2010-2011 = USC (?) residency? Or nag-bum siya ani na year?
    2011-2012 = USC/Adamson (?) residency?
2012-2013 = Adamson (Should be his return to the UAAP)
    2013-2014 = (projected) 3rd season
    2014-2015 = (projected) 4th season
    2015-2016 = (projected) 5th season

Sakto ba? Kay di ba technically, his 7th year out of HS will be 2016. Since the season kicks off 2015, maka-duwa pa siya?
