There was one cosplay event where some photographers first used their 70-200s only to switch to wider lenses because all they can get with the 70-200 are heads and shoulders shots. This was indoors by the way. You can get full body shoots with the 70-200, 100, 135 outdoors BUT ONLY IF you have a clear line of sight in a public event. Ok ra if you have paid models and you're the only photographer or you're with a small group taking turns shooting the model.
If by portraits you mean mostly heads and shoulders, then for a crop, go for the 135mm but for a bit more flexibility, get the 85mm or the 70-200. But if you want heads and shoulders and environmental portraits, better get the 24-70s, 28-75s, 24-105s, 28-135s.
I also want the 135mm F2L but decided that I'm better off with a good quality zoom. I want to shoot the legs too you know (wink wink).
