Renowned Pinoy designers offer free makeover of NAIA-1
Three Filipino designers on Wednesday unveiled on Facebook their “pro-bono proposal" to rehabilitate and renovate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.
Budji Layug, Royal Pineda, and Kenneth Cobonpue, all world-renowned in their respective fields of architecture and design, uploaded a video outlining their proposed makeover of NAIA 1.
World's worst airport
“It’s time someone did something about the worst airport in the world," they wrote in the description that accompanied the video, which was posted on Cobonpue’s Facebook community page.
The proposal was created in cooperation with the National Competitiveness Council of the Philippines, a public-private task force formed in 2006 to spearhead efforts for the Philippines to enter the top third of competitiveness rankings by 2016.
Recently, NAIA Terminal 1 made headlines after a travel website named it the “worst airport in the world" for 2011.
The “New NAIA Terminal Design," according to the video, will be an “urban oasis," that will be reflective of the country’s “festive atmosphere."
“This plan is relatively inexpensive and simple to adapt. The plan also involves renovating the interiors to allow faster flow of travelers through security, immigration and departure," according to the video.
Key features of the proposed design include a four-lane roundabout for travelers to be picked up and dropped off, a multi-deck parking building for visitors and a commercial complex within airport grounds. [See entire video of proposed new airport design here]
“We believe that no matter how beautiful our country is, our airports give the first and last impressions," the designers said.
The public’s response to the proposal has largely been positive, with nearly 700 “likes" on Facebook.
The three’s message to the Aquino government: “The first step has been done. Let’s hope our government moves on this proposal quickly." — with Bea Cupin/VS, GMA News
“What we call chaos is just patterns we haven't recognized. What we call random is just patterns we cant decipher. What we can't understand we call nonsense. What we can't read we call gibberish.” - Chuck Palahniuk
Trainings / recurrent trainings of airport staffs regarding tourist handling might come in handy with NAIA rehabilitation.. As far as I know, Airport Security Department conducts seminars for newbies regarding safety and security handling inside the terminal..
NAIA is disintegrating! and crooks are everywhere in sight!
with those crooks alone, it deserves its newly earned spot in the worst airports list. No one deserves to be fooled in airports especially tourists! No marketing campaign for tourism will ever lessen the inconvenience tourists experience in our airports.
With this news, arent we supposed to be seeing heads rolling already? Some deserves some sacking!
And to add to the injury ---
3 Cebu airport cops probed for extortion
CEBU CITY, Philippines - Three complaints have been filed against 3 police officers stationed at the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) for alleged extortion.
Local station manager Leo Lastimosa led complainants Tisha "Inday Tikay" Ylaya, Marc Ian Almeres, and Armenio Lopez in a meeting with MCIA officials.
Ylaya, who a DYAB radio anchor, said that she personally saw how airport police had asked taxi drivers for a certain amount of money for them to be able to load and unload passengers in the airport.
Almeres, a taxi driver of Juscar Taxi said that he was threatened by security guards and by airport policemen.
He said that they tried to beat him up when he refused to give them money but he was able to run away from them.
Lufthansa Airlines duty manager Armenio Lopez also revealed that the airport policemen allegedly extorted money from a delivery truck driver of their supplier.
He said that on the first day, the airport policemen refused to let the delivery truck pass.
The following day, an airport policeman asked the driver for money. The driver threw a P20 bill and the airport policeman immediately picked it up.
The 3 airport policemen were later identified to be Rene Conje, Rodolfo Maurin, and Cliff Alesna.
MCIA General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete, police chief Melvin Gayotin, and other officials were present in the meeting to answer the complaints.
Villarete said they appreciate the efforts of the complainants to formally raise their issues against the airport policemen.
An administrative case filed by the group was accepted by their legal counsel and Villarete said that they will immediately look into it.
Villarete wants to clarify that not all the airport policemen and security guards at MCIA are abusive.
ang title sa article aning bayhana kay misleading man, maybe way au jud ang terminal 1 pero world class pud baya ang terminal 3 as mentioned sa guide... the point is, this list is about the 10 best and worst airports to sleep in, na generalize na nuon ang whole naia... but they really have to fix terminal 1 or balhin mga flights sa t3 or unsa ba para d sad makita sa mga foreigners ang bati na airport na mureflect sa bati na country...
and to all the intl airports sa pilipinas, myta parehaon nila sa kaning mga top-airports-to-sleep-in na butangan kutson tanan benches kay para no need na checking in sa hotel, nice pud baya sleep sa airport ka try ko sa t3, sakit lang sa buko2x...

mu pinaka worst unsa nalang kaha ang cebu ug other airport nato dre? ??
sa cebu at least maka kita jud ka nga tight ang ilang security labaw na sa pag sugat sa mga parente nimo. they have a good system and honestly sa tanan airport ngari sa pinas na akong na agian ang mactan airport ang pinaka safest and strict security na akong ma feel. safer than the more recent NAIA 3 and new davao airport, didto di kaau strict ang mga guards and if you are a frequent traveler and hearing all those bombings in the news you would really prefer going to the hassle queuing on several layer of security checkpoints..
wow! didn't know about that! nice pud bro! nga nka share ka! sa imu experience!
bro and sis naa pa mu experience dha?
