3 Cebu airport cops probed for extortion
CEBU CITY, Philippines - Three complaints have been filed against 3 police officers stationed at the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) for alleged extortion.
Local station manager Leo Lastimosa led complainants Tisha "Inday Tikay" Ylaya, Marc Ian Almeres, and Armenio Lopez in a meeting with MCIA officials.
Ylaya, who a DYAB radio anchor, said that she personally saw how airport police had asked taxi drivers for a certain amount of money for them to be able to load and unload passengers in the airport.
Almeres, a taxi driver of Juscar Taxi said that he was threatened by security guards and by airport policemen.
He said that they tried to beat him up when he refused to give them money but he was able to run away from them.
Lufthansa Airlines duty manager Armenio Lopez also revealed that the airport policemen allegedly extorted money from a delivery truck driver of their supplier.
He said that on the first day, the airport policemen refused to let the delivery truck pass.
The following day, an airport policeman asked the driver for money. The driver threw a P20 bill and the airport policeman immediately picked it up.
The 3 airport policemen were later identified to be Rene Conje, Rodolfo Maurin, and Cliff Alesna.
MCIA General Manager Nigel Paul Villarete, police chief Melvin Gayotin, and other officials were present in the meeting to answer the complaints.
Villarete said they appreciate the efforts of the complainants to formally raise their issues against the airport policemen.
An administrative case filed by the group was accepted by their legal counsel and Villarete said that they will immediately look into it.
Villarete wants to clarify that not all the airport policemen and security guards at MCIA are abusive.
