Default Jasper as a generic document generation tool

Hi, ngayo lang ko inyo inputs.

I guess most of you who have used Jasper Reports use it to - obviously - generate reports. duh!

My question is, can you use it to generate generic documents? Ergo, documents that AREN'T reports. Say, for example, an automated letter of authority na naai fields na ireplace lang ang sulod. Or a company form that is filled up by your app then generate a pdf using jasper.

I don't know if someone here in this office is high on crack or something but they believe this can be pulled off but my searches in google yielded no practical example of doing this. Jasper reports is for reports.

The only other solution that came up was iText, which I believe is far more capable of achieving the desired output.

Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Pwede bai.

    Going technical a bit.

Jasper don't necessarily need tabular data.
You have report variables, which you can place in the header part of the report.
And of course since you have no tabular data, you don't need to use the details part of Jasper.

If you are planning to use Jasper, I would like to suggest that using IReport will make your life easier making Jasper reports.

    Yes, I use iReport too.

Ang prob nako bro is that the pdf out put is very elaborate. daghan kaayo arte. If you've seen those fancy travel brochures or insurance brochures the client wants our output to look like that.

in short, daghan kaayo kikay ang pdf na output niya.

I would like to think you need some graphics for that.
You need an initial image which you can add in jasper later.
Pwede raman nimo i-add og image sa report.
Then for the dynamic fields, pwede ra mag sapawsapaw basta itransparent lang imong layout.

Kahinumdum ko bai, naa ko corporate report sa una, nga daghan decorations sa borders.
Naa sad ko mga certification type documents nga kaya ra gihapon sa Jasper.

Otherwise all the images needed are from other sources.

Hopefully, we are on the same boat.

murag same same na idea bro. lisura bro oi. tapos we're limited to jasper 3 lang. di mi ka upgrade.

we decided to use itext purely nalang. kai futurewise walay mosupport. tiaw mo na ako ra nag gamit ani sa tibuok company. nya ang nagtudlo nako resign na. from a maintenance perspective mahal siya in the end.

we have decided to just go with purely iText. Firstly, walay mo maintain sa jasper implementation if ever amo idayon. Secondly, the learning curve and tricky way to apply our proposed document into jasper is too time consuming and the deadline was december 2011. We managed to build the document generation module ahead of schedule (thankfully).

May gani naapas pa. Wasted a full month trying to get the jasper reports to do what we want from our project.
