Something ‘fishy’: AFP hand suspect in Fr. Pops’ slay

ARAKAN, North Cotabato—Residents and church workers said Fr. Fausto Tentorio had been under constant threat and there were signs indicating elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines were involved.
Weeks before the Italian missionary was gunned down on Monday by a lone assassin, his church compound had been under surveillance, according to Leoncio Lubiano, head of the parish formation and catechism.
Lubiano said that since August several fish carts were seen around the Church’s compound. The fish vendors claimed they were from Digos City in Davao del Sur province and just wanted to know what was in the church.
“Sometimes, they slept here at night. They were still around last week but on the day Father Fausto was killed, they were gone,” said Lubiano.
On October 14, soldiers belonging to the 57th Infantry Battalion were asking Basic Ecclesiastical Community leaders in the village of Badiangon if they had Tentorio’s mobile phone number.
The following day, after Tentorio said Mass in Barangay Dalag, police confiscated a sack full of long firearms aboard a motorcycle driven by a civilian, Lubiano said.
Tentorio was already out of the area when the firearms, including two M-16 rifles, were held. When the police detained the civilian and confiscated the firearms, a military officer—a certain Captain Espiritu—texted the police claiming ownership.
On the eve of the attack on the priest, two military vehicles called Kennedy were seen patrolling the church area.

Pope cites slain priest's courage

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI expressed his condolences on Wednesday for the killing of an Italian priest in southern Philippines, saying he had been "courageous and indefatigable."
Father Fausto Tentorio was "a good priest, a fervent believer who for many years served the people of the Philippines in a courageous and indefatigable way," the pope said in a message to the Vatican's envoy to the Philippines
The message to the Apostolic Nuncio in Manila, Giuseppe Pinto, will be in Thursday's edition of the Vatican's official daily, Observatore Romano.
Tentorio was shot inside his church compound on Monday on Mindanao, a vast island home to majority of Muslim Filipinos.
The 59-year-old priest had served for the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) congregation in the island since 1978 and had received a death threat in 2009.
Police said an unknown gunman shot Tentorio eight times at his PIME parish in the remote farming town of Arakan, Cotabato on Monday as he got into his car.
The assailant escaped and police said they do not know why Tentorio was killed, but his colleagues told AFP they suspected his death was linked to his efforts to help local tribes and other disadvantaged people in the area.

AFP admits tagging Fr. Tentorio rebel pal
Uncertainty over whom to trust has made it difficult for persons close to Fr. Fausto Tentorio to cooperate in the inquiry into his murder.
This problem was aired Thursday by Justice Undersecretary Francisco Baraan, chairman of a special task force on extralegal killings. But he expressed hope that another trip to Tentorio’s parish in Arakan, North Cotabato province, would result in a free disclosure of information from the Italian missionary’s colleagues and friends.
Lieutenant Colonel Leopoldo Galon, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMincom) admitted that authorities had labeled Tentorio as “friendly” to the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
State agents killed Fr. Tentorio?
By Joan Mae Soco-Bantayan
QUEZON CITY (MindaNews/21 October) — Government prosecutors have entertained the possibility that state agents were behind the killing of Italian missionary Fr. Fausto Tentorio, in Arakan, North Cotabato.
The Department of Justice is now looking into this angle with the identification of two suspects, Justice Undersecretary Francisco Baraan said in a media conference on extrajudicial killings at the University of the Philippines.
Fr. Pops, as Tentorio was fondly called, was gunned down early morning on October 17 as he was about to leave his convent in Arakan for a clergy meeting in Kidapawan City.
Baraan said they have also been asked to look into what has happened to other cases of extralegal killings where the victims, like Tentorio, were known to be actively involved in human rights and related issues.

The title of that article from Philippine Star should have been 'Italian priest shot dead in Arakan'
The same thing for this thread. Be responsible enough. Mindanao is too big for that incident to happen.
