Over the past few years we have been lucky enough to look at the majority of Razers product catalogue and have often come away very impressed. There have been some true classics released in that time, from the original DeathAdder mouse to the Mako 2.1 speaker system and more recently the awesome Naga EPIC MMO Mouse. Along the way things haven't always been as good though and recently we saw Razer release a range of licenced products which didn't quite live up to their normal high standard.

So when Razer offered us their licenced TRON mouse and mat we were a little sceptical about the products, wary due to our experience with other licenced products but still hoping that with this particular set of items that Razer could reach their normal levels of quality. Read on to find out how they did.

Razer TRON Gaming Mouse and Mat - Packaging and Bundle







Razer package their TRON gear in a box which clearly illustrates what the products look like and on the back we get some detailed information on the mouse specifications and features. Inside this outer box we find a presentation style box with more TRON branding and within this is the mouse and pad suspended in a blue tray.



Within the box, as well as the mouse and mat, we find the usual selection of Razer documentation and a set of stickers. As always Razer recommend we head to their website for the latest software and so no driver CD is provided.

The TRON Mouse Mat Designed by Razer







The mat is a hard surface with textured main area that features TRON styling and a black plastic trim with Razer logo. The underside of the mat has further branding and is rubber coated to ensure it doesn't move on the desk used by the consumer.

The TRON mat measures 290x207x3mm also has one feature which makes it stand out from other pads but more on that later...

The TRON mouse has a rather unique styling due to the film tie-in and the top surface is a smooth, black plastic surface with blue highlights. In the palm area of this ambidextrous mouse is a Razer logo and in the centre is a wide mouse wheel which acts as the 7th button.

The mouse measures 110x61.3x33.5mm.





The left and right hand side of the TRON mouse have two rubber coated buttons which are located in the thumb position and surrounded by another blue trim. As with the rest of the buttons these are fully configurable in the Razer software.



Underneath the TRON mouse there are four ultraslick feet along with the 5600 DPI, 3.5G laser sensor. The resolution of the sensor can be configured from 100 to 5600DPI in 100dpi steps and acceleration, XY sensitivity and on the fly changes are available.

To further tie-in with the TRON styling Razer have added lighting to the Mouse which causes the blue trim on the top surface and mouse wheel to illuminate. Added to this is a rather cool sound effect which plays when the system is turned on or the mouse connected. These add quite a geek pleasing factor to the mouse but Razer didn't stop there. There are also two lights on the bottom of the mouse, one shines light out of the back. The other activates the extra feature of the mat which we hinted at earlier... that feature is a bioluminescent surface which glows after the mouse light comes into contact with it. This means as we move our mouse it leaves a trail on the mat, lit up in a rather cool bluish green. See the video above for an example of this in action.



The final aspect of the mouse is a 7 foot (2 meter) braided cable which ends in a TRON inspired USB connector.

Razer Software



As with all Razer mice the TRON version has upgradable firmware to fix any bugs or allow for enhanced performance after purchase. The update process is simple; we install the upgrade utility and then run it. A few mouse clicks later we are on the latest version.



As with the Razer StarCraft 2 licenced peripherals the TRON mouse has a control panel which features branding appropriate for the franchise. In this first screen we can control the features assigned to the seven buttons and scroll wheel as well as choose the profile in use. There is also a button available which says keyboard which tells us the TRON gaming board will use the same application for its settings, a nice bit of integration from Razer.



In the second screen we can select the sensitivity of the mouse, profile, sensitivity stages for on the fly changes, acceleration, separate X/Y settings and change the polling rate from 125 to 1000Hz.



Next up is the profile screen where we can add or delete settings based on our requirements. We can also export the settings we create to share with other TRON mouse users and import settings from these contacts should they choose to send us their profiles.



Macros are of course fully supported by this device and in the 2nd from last tab we can create, delete, import and export these commands. As with all good gaming mice the recording function supports delays and we can enter the advanced settings to add commands such as Save or Lock PC.



Finally the last panel provides us with our lighting configuration and in the top right of the interface is a small button which sends us to the Razer site to find the latest drivers and firmware.

User Experience and Conclusion



The TRON mouse is best suited to a palm or fingertip style grip and we settled on the former. While in palm "mode" we found the mouse to be comfortable and accurate with the lightweight design ensuring that we suffered no fatigue during long gaming sessions. As with Razers other mice the specifications are at the high end of the scale and the 5600DPI sensor mixed with macro and profile ability give the mouse some real substance.

Looking at the TRON mat we found it to give a nice, smooth experience which combined well with the mouse for low noise movement and good accuracy. If we are being particularly picky we would have liked it to be a little larger but other than that it is hard to fault.

The software provided by Razer is simple to use and intelligently arranged to ensure that novice and expert users can get the most from their mouse and we were pleased to see that the TRON keyboard will be integrated in to the same application. Firmware updates were also easy to perform, simply download the file and a few mouse clicks later the mouse is running the latest version.

For all that Razer have put effort into the software, specifications and performance it is the styling which is probably the biggest aspect of this mouse. It is aimed at TRON fans, or movie fans in general and we would have to say that Razer have completely succeeded in capturing the feel of the franchise. The mouse looks awesome in the flesh and sent our inner geek into fits when it first lit up with accompanying sound effect. When we then noticed the bioluminescent trail on the mouse mat, it tipped us over the edge. A truly cool mouse and one which has impressed every one of our friends and colleagues who has seen it.

So that brings us to value. At £79.99 for the mouse or £130 for the mouse and pad we do feel that Razer are at the high end of the pricing they could use for this product. It is undoubtedly cool and it does perform well but there are better value alternatives out there for those who care less about aesthetics.

Summary

An outstanding design and without doubt the coolest mouse we have used. It will cause the geek within to laugh out loud when it first fires up and leaves a bioluminescent trail. Thankfully Razer have backed up this high end style with a quality software application and high spec sensor to ensure that in sue we also get a great performing mouse.
