SHS-AdC Sweeps Milo BEST
Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu went high and low in sweeping the championships of both the Small Basketeers Philippines (SBP) and Passerelle divisions of the Milo-backed BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournaments for Cebu over the weekend. The Magis Eagles went to their high octane offense to defeat University of the Visayas (UV), 73-44, and win their fifth straight Passerelle championship at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex, while their younger SBP counterparts won a defense-oriented and low-scoring finale, 31-24, over University of San Carlos (USC) North Campus.
In winning their fifth straight Cebu Passerelle championship, SHS-AdC overcame an early scare from UV which kept the game close by fielding a strong starting five in the first quarter where the Magis Eagles would lead by only one, 13-12. SHS-AdC’s second quarter unit then kicked off a mini breakaway, giving the team a 27-19 lead behind the 11-point production of Jair Igna and Jarek Mercado. The four-peat defending champions finally broke the game wide open in the third period behind the quarterbacking of Rendell Senining and the combined 17 points of Janjan Jaboneta and, giving the team an insurmountable 53-28 lead going into the final period. MVP Hynric Ochea led the team with 13 points as Paul Desiderio led UV with 14.
If the Passerelle finals was about offense, the SBP finals was totally opposite. The game was played to a defensive-minded “grind it out” tone, with SHS-AdC controlling the first half, only to lose its lead in the third period before recovering in the final quarter. The Magis Eagles took the first two periods 12-6 and 19-12, but USC North’s defense fueled a rally in the third period, limiting SHS-AdC to only two points while scoring nine of their own to tie the count at 21-all, setting the stage for a deciding fourth quarter. SHS-AdC returned the favor with their version of a suffocating defense, leaving USC North scoreless for nearly five minutes in a 7-0 run from the start of the fourth period with offense coming from four different players in Carlos Canoy, John Chen, Jed Colonia and Ian Amante. Jomari Ranuco would score USC North’s only field goal in the fourth quarter with 3:35 left to cut the lead to 28-23, but Colonia and Canoy would put the game out of reach at 31-23, 1:46 left. Steven Co made a free throw for USC North for the final count. Canoy and Colonia led SHS-AdC with seven points each, while Ranuco paced USC North with six. The Magis Eagles thus scored their second straight SBP championship.
In the battle for third place of the Passerelle division, UC went to their three-point bombs in the fourth quarter to stop a rallying USC South side, 81-75. In the SBP division, CEC topped USC South, 49-44, for third place.
For defending their respective championships, both SHS-AdC SBP and Passerelle teams will represent Cebu in the Visayas Regional Finals where the Passerelle team seeks a fourth straight title while the SBP looks for back-to-back titles. This will be held in Roxas City on October 22-23

Jupasko notes: Highlighted above are names of players of both UV and SHS AdC who are playing for their schools in the cesafi jrs. basketball championship campaign. It gives you an idea about how young the SHS AdC players are compared to their UV or CEC counterparts.
Why did UV Baby Lancers finally prevail over SHS AdC in Cesafi on their 5th meeting, in double over time at that, starting with last season's first encounter? Answers (1) because the UV coaches (from SBP to college) scouted the championship game between the Magis Eagle and UV passerelle teams to give Coach Pepito all the help he needs (2) the young SHS AdC Magis Eagles still has to develop its killer instinct to be able to close out games against equally superior opponents.

Mga duwa karong Huwebes
5:15 pm- USJR batok SHSJ (jrs)
6:45 pm- SWU batok UC (srs)
Kon modaog ang Cobras, hayan ikapareha nila og rekord ang 9-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers apan pinaagi sa quotient, hayan sila maoy makaangkon sa no.2 unya modakin-as sa no.3 ang Green Lancers.

The CEC Dragons this year has a younger age average compared to Sacred Heart. Almost half of the team are in 2nd year and are 14 years old. Just to straighten facts. But I don't believe age is the factor in the games this 2011 CESAFI season.
When UV won against the Eaglets, it was Desiderio, a pasarelle player who won it for the baby Lancers. Games are won by many factors: scouting, coaching, players, teamwork, talents, etc.
