There really is no universal meaning for "D" in anime. Actually, this is the first time I heard someone asking this kind of question.

I can't blame you for wondering what "D" means. IIRC, Ryosuke did say there is a deep meaning for "D" in Project D... but even after the series (stage 4) ended, there was no definite explanation. I think it is up to the fans/ viewers on how they understand it.

This was a very hot topic way back. Some say it stands for an obvious drift/drifting. Some say it stands for Domination... defeat, doom, death, dancing, dick, deepshit, doraemon, doggy style, dadadada, dsjiouoihjahfad, dunnowhatdhellitmeans

I don't know if it is mentioned in the manga since I haven't read it. Last time I checked, the manga is still ongoing. Maybe it is already answered in the manga?
