CEBU, Philippines - Spunky playmaker John Michael Abad scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers vanquished the University of Cebu (UC), 74-69, putting dirt to the Webmasters' erstwhile unblemished 9-0 record in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

    Games today
    (Cebu Coliseum)
5:15 pm UC vs. UV (jrs.)
6:45 pm USPF vs. USJ-R (srs.)

Top center Adrian Lao, who also charted 10 markers in the final canto, initiated the Lancers' big run as he wisely recognized that UC's 6-foot-9 center Junemar Fajardo is no longer a defensive asset after committing four fouls.

Lao courageously took shots from the perimeter so that Fajardo will step out of his comfort zone at the post where he is a ferocious defender and scorer at the same time.

The Lancers led in the entire fourth period. After a high-arching jump shot by Andrew Avillanoza that gave them a 47-46 edge, Lao scored six straight points to pad their lead to 58-52 with still 5:50 left to play.
A steal by Abad marked the final breakaway for the Lancers, who enjoyed as much as 11 points lead, 63-52, with 5:15 to go.

John Michael Auditor hit back-to-back triples as the Webmasters came within five, 58-63. They further threatened at 63-65 going into the last two-minute zone, but the Lancers fought with grace under fire to halt UC's previousy unbeaten streak.

Lao topscored for the Lancers with 18 points, while Harold Cincoflores added 17 as they improved their win-loss record to 6-2.

Fajardo led the 9-1 Webmasters with 22 points, while Auditor, a former Baby Lancer, finished with 17. The missing link was top gunner Robinson Mohammad, who was held off to a measly four points due to the Lancers' stifling defense.

Neither Pao nor Luigi Bercede could go out of his way as they have limited outputs combining for only 16 points.

In the high school matches, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors escaped past the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 90-88, while the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles shoot down the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 88-72. The other highlight of the day was the 38-point rout by the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons against the UC Junior Webmasters, 101-63.
    The scores

    UV (74) - Lao 18, Cincoflores 17, Abad 14, Silva 9, Avillanoza 9, Rios 4, Mercader 2, Saycon 1
    UC (69) - Fajardo 22, Auditor 17, Bercede 9, Heruela 8, Pao 7, Mohammad 4, Batino 2 Halftime: 28-25 (FREEMAN)

The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers dismantled the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 108-76, to gain a share of the lead in the standings in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Unlike the fierce rivalry between their senior counterparts, the match between the bantamweights was a whitewash as UV asserted its dominance in the second and third periods to outscore its opponent, 56-29. UV now has an 11-1 (win-loss) record, the same as the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles.

Five players reached double figures for the Baby Lancers led by the 21 of Ron Dennison, the younger brother of former UV Green Lancer Ritchum Dennison. Dexter Lucero and big man Reeve Ugsang each had 14 markers.

UC, which fell to a dismal 3-12, was paced by the 17 of Kent Trangia and the 13 of Andrey Armenion.

Fiba rating sa PH misaka sa ika-45| More | Ni Erwin S. Lirazan

    Tuesday, September 27, 2011

“Whatever it takes. Whether it’s 2012, 2016, 2020 or pag patay na ako,” batbat pa ni Pangilinan.

JAGUARS END SLIDE USJ-R beats USPF for second win in Cesafi seniors hoop

    Games Thursday (Cebu Coliseum)
    5:15 p.m. – USC vs. SHS-AdC (jrs.)
    6:45 p.m. – USC vs. UV (srs.)

The University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars finally broke out from their long dry spell as they captured their second win of the tournament after beating the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 74-68, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament late Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

It has been a season to forget for the Jaguars so far, but Tuesday gave them a ray of light as they took control of the match in the second period where they outscored the Panthers, 21-8 to take a 37-29 lead at halftime. The lead remained at six, 53-47, heading to the fourth period.

USPF though, did not give in easily as they climbed to within one, 57-58, with an 8-0 run which featured baskets by James Ferraren, Joseph Sedurifa and Fritz Dajalos. However, USJ-R fielded an answer in pointguard Banjo Capilar who handedly ignited an 8-2 run with two treys which put the Jaguars in front, 66-60, with 4:38 left.

Abulaiz Suliman then put the game away as he converted on a difficult lay-up and followed that up with a three-point play off a putback which gave the Jaguars a 71-60 advantage with 2:57 left in the game.

Capilar had an incredible game scoring 28 points spiked with six three-point shots which pushed USJ-R to their second win in 10 games. Suliman finished with 17 while Jason Olbedado added 12. The Panthers were led by the 15 points of Randy Avila and Ferraren and the 11 of Sedurifa. USPF’s failed bid was made more pronounced by the measly eight-point production of Dajalos.

Meanwhile, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers will try to follow up their huge win over rivals, University of Cebu, with another victory today when they face off against the tough University of San Carlos Warriors.

In the juniors division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles aim for the solo leadership in the standings when they take on USC.

The Magis Eagles are currently tied with UV for the lead with identical 11-1 records.

Jaguars down Panthers By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 29, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars logged their first win in four games of the second round via a 74-68 decision over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season last Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

    Games today (Cebu Coliseum)
5:15 pm USC vs. SHS-AdC (jrs.)
6:45 pm USC vs. UV (srs.)

Banjo Capillar knocked in two clutch triples late in the fourth period to help the Jaguars end their drought spanning for more than a month. He had a career-high 28 points for the Jaguars, who never scored victory since August 20 when they defeated the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 80-69, during the first round.

The Jaguars improved their win-loss record to 2-8 but they are still two games behind the Panthers, who sport a 4-6 slate.

Abulaiz Suliman finished with 17 points for the Jaguars, while Jason Olbedado added 12 points.

The usually resilient Panthers, whose biggest catch of the season was their 62-59 upset of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras during the first round, came close for the last time at 57-58 on two charities by Joseph Sedurifa with still 6:42 to go in the game.

Capillar made it 60-57 and then hit a triple to make it 63-57 before hitting another three-pointer for a 66-59 lead as they doused cold water at the height of the Panthers' rally.

Later, Suliman's three-point play off a foul by Anthony Linao gave the Jaguars their largest lead at 11 points, 71-60.

The Jaguars were also ahead at halftime, 37-29, as they held off the Panthers to just eight points in the second period as against their 21-point haul.

Sedurifa, James Ferraren and Randy Avila had a balanced scoring among them but the missing link was Fritz Dajalos who just finished with eight points.

Sedurifa topscored with 17 points. while Ferraren and Avila had identical 15 points in a losing cause.

    The scores

    USJ-R (74) - Capillar 28, Suliman 17, Olbedado 12, Abing 5, Genodiala 5, Dela Rama 3, Sanchez 2, Cinco 2

SHS-AdC scores tenth victory By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated September 30, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

Jupasko note::::::: Mr. Malagar erred by 2. SHS AdC's record now stands at 12 wins, 1 loss.

CEBU, Philippines - Height advantage helped decide the game for favorite Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, who agonized for more than three quarters before pulling off a 78-69 victory over the smaller University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors.

The battle was the lone secondary encounter last night for 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

    Games tomorrow: Cebu Coliseum
1 pm CIT-U vs. UC (Jrs.)
2:30 pm UV vs. USJR (Jrs.)
4 pm DBTC vs. USP-F (Jrs.)
5:30 pm USJR vs. SWU (Srs.)

The presence of Julius Cadavis made a little difference down the homestretch as despite scoring only 10 points, he controlled the boards as neither Mark Andersson nor Richard Sevilleno of the Baby Warriors could contain his rebounding power.

Aaron Sing played limited minutes and scored just eight points for the Magis Eagles.

It was Maverick Suarez who led the SHS-AdC offense with 19 points and Dawn Henric Ochea made 13.

The Baby Warriors threatened for most of the way and despite being outscored in the fourth period, 24-11, they managed to bring down the deficit to 64-70 off a basket by Ian Ortega, the leading scorer for the team who finished with a night-high 24 markers.

Andersson chipped in with 11 points for the Baby Warriors who fell to a 2-9 win-loss record as against their conquerors, who lead the juniors division with a 10-1 win-loss record.

The lone loss of the Magis Eagles came in the hands of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens, 71-62 last September 17.

Meanwhile, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers who are gunning to go up to the second position, battled against the unpredictable USC Warriors in last night's main event.

The Lancers have a 6-2 win-loss record while the Warriors have 6-4 win-loss slate. (FREEMAN)

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles regained the solo leadership in the standings after they got past the resilient University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 78-69, in the juniors division of the 2011 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The victory put the Magis Eagles slightly in front of the University of the Visayas (UV) in the standings as they now have a 12-1 (win-loss) record, half-a-game ahead of the latter’s 11-1 card.Mavii Suarez led the Eagles with 19 markers. Dawn Ochea added 13 while Julius Cadavis finishing with 10.

After a nip-and-tuck battle in the first half, the Magis Eagles started to pull away in the third period and finished the job off by going to the big men in the final canto to net them the win.

USC remained tied with the league leaders at 43-all at halftime behind Ian Ortega, who racked 15 markers in the first half.

Ateneo de Cebu uncorked a 15-4 run late in the third period behind baskets by Patrick Go, Suarez and Dave Yu, that put them in front, 67-54.

Recognizing their enormous advantage in height, the Magis Eagles lorded over the lane in the fourth period as all 11 of their points in that stretch were scored by their centers.

An 8-2 fourth quarter run with inside baskets from Suarez, Dawn Ochea and Julius Cadavis capped off the hard-earned win. Ortega had another stellar effort as he finished with 24 points for USC.
