Sour Bolts lose to MLKP Cebu Niños
    By Rommel C. Manlosa
    Sunday, September 25, 2011

THE old reliable hands delivered the needed points for the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños’ 79-73 mastery over the Meralco Bolts at the end of the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Invitational Games held at the University of San Carlos Gym yesterday.

Stephen Padilla, Richard Ian Saladaga and Nat Cruz combined for 43 points en route to leading the Cebu squad to their second victory in three games.

The defeat was Meralco’s second straight after their impressive win in the opening day. The Bolts also lost to the Alaska Aces, 67-61, last Saturday evening.

Leading by three points, 21-18, after the first quarter, the Niños found themselves struggling to score and allowed Meralco to take a 38-34 lead at halftime.

But MLKP was able to wrest back the lead after outscoring the Bolts, 22-16, and had total control of the game in the final period.

The game was marred by some ugly incidence, with the Bolts even threatening to walk out of the game.

On the prodding of team manager Virgil Villavicencio, who was seen complaining most of the time against the referees’ calls, the Bolts did a short sit -down protest after coach Boyet Fernandez was slapped with a technical foul at the 3:39 mark of the fourth quarter. The coach got in trouble after he entered the court while protesting a non-call.
However, after some sweet talking by technical chief Boy Murillo and a few catcalls from the crowd, the Bolts decided to return to the game.

But it did not stop there as Villavicencio mimed a right hook on referee Jerry Jaranilla, while one of its staff approached the table officials to ask for the names of the referees.

After the final buzzer, the Bolts officials stormed out of the playing court and did not even bother to receive the trophy and the plaque of appreciation that was signed by Mayor Mike Rama.

Cruz topscored for the Niños with 16 points, Padilla added 14 and Saladaga finished with 13. Mac-Mac Cardona topped Meralco with 11 and Gabby Espinas added 10.
