It was by random chance that a cloud of gas and other matter spun around and eventually formed our sun. And it was by random chance that other heavier elements formed from exploding stars to converge and form a planet that orbited near the sun. It was by random chance that the conditions on that orbiting rock were just right for liquid water to exist. And it was random chance that caused certain amino acids to combine and self replicate, thereby forming the precursor to DNA. It was random chance that caused this DNA, through millions or even billions of years of replication , to form multi-cellular organisms capable reproducing, and evolving into myriad forms of life. It was random chance that caused the mutations on the DNA of the current crop of plants and animals (including humans) we have right now to be just right for them to survive.

When humans evolved enough intelligence and knowhow, they began to farm and raise livestock for food because it was more convenient and it meant that societies never had to live hand to mouth anymore. At the same time, commerce was also developed and a system of exchange was devised to make trade easier. This is called money.

As human civilization progressed, farming went into a larger scale. Industrial innovations allowed for even larger scale farming and distribution of goods to an ever growing human population. At the same time, industries and businesses dependent on goods and the transfer of goods flourished, as the demands grew. Businesses needed labor, and hired people to fill their labor needs. In exchange for the labor and services, they paid their employees money, which they would in turn exchange for goods like food. People like you work for money to buy food, this is how commerce works. This is how food got into your table.

    Off topic alert!

Here's my 2 cents on this issue; while I am a liberal humanist-atheist myself, I believed that it was quite insensitive of Filipino culture for the artist to create something as controversial as that. OK, I get it; he was trying to "push the boundaries of art and initiate social discourse on the different gods our society bows down to". But it is just too soon for Philippine society; I respect other people's faiths and beliefs (well, except Scientology) wholeheartedly, and I believe in the adage "to each his own". This work of art however is just simply crossing the line; maybe if you pulled off this stunt in Europe or whatever you can get away with it, but no, it's just insulting and insensitive to Filipino culture.

I say, if he really wants to stir controversy and a debate, have him do the same thing to a picture of Muhammad. I want to see how long he lasts, and on what kind of "debate" results from that "work of art". Christians are different; they don't go out and kill people just because someone made a mockery of their faith, probably because of the secularization of the different institutions that govern them. Muslims however, still are not fully capable of separating Church and State. That's the kind of controversy I want to see.

    EDIT:

Now I've figured out Mideo Cruz's business plan:

    1. Create something very controversial (Poleteismo)
    2. Get persecuted for it.
    3. File for asylum in some European country.
    4. ?
    5. PROFIT!

Is it okay for me to assume that you are an atheist? if so, that leads me to another question- are you a father? and do you preach atheism to your kids?
well of course open-mindedness is relative. it's relative to how much you want to invest on it.

to illustrate: if you want to be able to say open-minded so you remain hip and updated, you have the kind of open-mindedness you are displaying right now - which is really just your regular close-mindedness covered thick in hypocrisy and layered with a crunchy coating of denial. you call it open-mindedness, you market it as you being open minded, heck, you might actually believe that you ARE open-minded. but at the end of the day, you're just your original close-minded self, except you now have a thick coating of hypocrisy and denial on you.

on the other hand, if you are someone honest and forthright and just can't stand the thought of being fake to yourself, then you have this other other kind of open-mindedness - which is when you allow for the existence of things, ideas and whatnot which are not only insulting to you but may also be way beyond anything you have ever experienced. you are honest enough to believe that your thoughts and feelings do not dictate what is around you - rather it is the other way around. therefore, you do not judge but reflect and try to understand.

don't do me the disservice of labeling me under what 'theist'-labeling you want me to put under. you can assume that i believe in god, just not a god who likes to protect rapists and pedophiles, takes attendance and supports a human-made pyramid of power which shamelessly calls itself "the church".

i have kids and i don't preach to them. i talk to them and teach them.

ah, nicely worded! would that we could continue crossing words and fencing ideas!

do note, however, that i was not in anyway trying to convert you to any religious doctrine. that's what you people do.

and you need not be sorry. a lot of people were my catechists and they all succeeded. in fact, they succeeded so much that they showed me the: "illusion behind the magic", to put it poetically.
