THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers posted its first victory in the high school basketball of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) last night after an 88-77 rout over winless University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors at the Cebu Coliseum.

It was a closely-contested match the whole way between two hungry teams that are at the bottom of the pit, looking for its first victory

USC had the early advantage with a close 21-20 lead in the first frame. USPF then took over the lead with a one-point advantage at halftime, 36-35.

The Baby Warriors slowly climbed back and gained a 61-59 lead going into the final period.

Rommel Diapera and Winston Bolivar lifted the Baby Panthers to victory with an amazing fourth-quarter performance, combining for 23 points.

After being down by five points near the halfway mark of the fourth, Diapera, who had a game-high 36 points, scored three straight baskets for USPF to take the lead, 70-69.

USC took a one-point lead, 71-70, after a layup by Mitchel Antigua. However, USC failed to catch up after Bolivar, who scored 23, and Diapera started a 6-0 run with less than five minutes on the clock.

Ian Ortega led USC with 18 points, but was silent in the final period with just two points.

The Baby Panthers improved to 1-1, while the Baby Warriors are at the bottom of the heap with a 0-4 record.

    USPF (8—Diapera 36, Bolivar 23, Gairanod 10, Amontos 6, Cando 5, Remedio 4, Villarta 3, Ponsica.

    USC (77)—Ortega 18, Sevelleno 12, Lim 11, Antigua 9, Arnejo 8, Andersson 7, Mahan 6, Ignacio 4, Savior 2.

USC hands USPF first loss By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated August 25, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors hammered out an 87-78 victory over the previously undefeated University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers to improve their win-loss record to 3-2 in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament the other night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Warriors let the Panthers watched them doing a virtual cage clinic in the third period where they ripped the game apart with a mind-boggling 29-point lead, 54-25.

On the part of the Panthers, their game was totally different and they never showed any semblance of sharpness the way they tamed the Jaguars and the Cobras w- 73-63 and 62-59, respectively.

The early disqualification of back-up scorer Joseph Sedurifa with still 1:58 to go in the third period has crippled the Panthers in the last quarter although they managed to rally in the final two minutes when they were allowed by the Warriors to score garbage points.

Michael June Cantonao led the Warriors with 19 points, even as Joven Cid Cortes and Sam Hermosa added 13 and 12 points, respectivley.

Fritz Dajalos scored 20 points and James Ferraren added 19 markers for the Panthers, who saw their two-game winning streak come to a sudden red stop.

Meanwhile, the Junemar Fajardo-led University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters hope to keep their unbeaten record intact when they test the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in a highly-anticipated showdown of strong title contenders.

Fresh from a humbling yet learning experience against hardcourt giants from other Asian countries during the 26th Universiade in Shenzhen, China, the 2-0 Webmasters hope to extend their run when they take on the unpredictable Cobras.

Mauled by the Russians, whipped by the Lithuanians and Ukrainians and lectured by New Zealanders and the Japanese, the Webmasters returned home empty-handed last Saturday but without any regret. This will be another test of character for Fajardo, the reigning MVP, when he is matched up by a center of his size in Justin Aboude.

During the 5th CESAFI Partners' Cup last April, Fajardo had a hard time defending the skinny 6-foot-9 Nigerian Alinko Mbah of the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons and they were easily beaten by a mile.

Even the season opener last August 7 was a scary one for the Webmasters as they needed an overtime to pull off a 95-87 win against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.

    The scores

    USC (87) - Cantonao 19, Cortes 13, Hermosa 12, Otida 9, Panerio 7, Duran 6, Padillo 5, Magat 5, Santos 4, Bautista 3, Codilla 2, Adlawan 2

    USPF (7 - Dajalos 20, J. Ferraren 19, E. Ferraren 16, Linao 9, Sedurifa 8, Avila 8 (FREEMAN)

USPF Panthers lose magic, absorb first loss in Cesafi basketball from USC Warriors
    | More | By Edri K. Aznar

    Wednesday, August 24, 2011

FOLLOWING a surprise performance this season, going unbeaten in its first two games in the collegiate division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers suffered their first defeat, 87-78, at the hands of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors the other night at the Cebu Coliseum.

USPF pulled off two come-from-behind victories in its first two games despite being down in the first half of those two matches. However, this time the Panthers lost their magic despite a strong second half.

USC meant business as it immediately dominated the ballgame, outscoring USPF, 25-9, in the first quarter.

USC exercised a 27-point cushion at halftime, 50-23, thanks to the sweet shooting of June Michael Cantonao, who had 16 points at that half including five shots from beyond the arc. Cantonao scored 19 points and sank six three pointers in the game.

USPF was down 32-28 in halftime in its opening game against University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and 36-28 in its upset win over Southwestern University (SWU). USPF beat USJ-R, 73-63, and SWU, 62-59.

Although buried by a huge margin, USPF worked hard and narrowed USC’s lead to 21 points at the end of the third period. Fritz Dajalos scored back-to-back three pointers, while Joseph Sedurifa started a 9-0 rally midway in the period with a three point shot. However, USPF lost Sedurifa, one of its key players on offense, in that quarter after committing his fifth foul.

USPF continued to shave off USC’s lead but it was a little too late as it didn’t have enough time to pull off another come-from-behind victory. USPF outscored USC, 55-37, in the second half.

The Warriors improved to the second place with a 3-2 slate behind league leader University of the Visayas (UV), while the Panthers slid down to fourth place at 2-1.

Meanwhile, after a disappointing stint in the 2011 Universiade, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters take on the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in a much-anticipated game at 6:45.

UC is still unbeaten in the tournament with a 2-0 record, while SWU, 1-2, is fresh from a victory over UV.
