This is a sad and gloomy song. Obviously he lost someone significant (i.e best friend, family member, GF etc.) and this song is describing how different the world seems without that person. He recalls past moments and even though he's mourning the loss of his love, he realizes that he must go on and find himself again in the world. This song signifies that everything changes in this world and nothing is constant. Furthermore, the song conveys that we should learn how to cope and adapt to those changes.

The ultimate Sad Song™ for me would have to be Hurt, original by NIN and remade by the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash. I personally prefer the Johnny Cash version because of how haunting his voice is, and I know a lot of people would agree that it is indeed the better version. I am at work right now, though, so I won't be able to post a youtube link, but here are the lyrics to give you an example of how soul-crushingly morose it is:
