SHS-Ateneo scores second straight win

CEBU, Philippines - The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles smothered the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens, 89-62, for their second straight victory in the secondary division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Earlier, defending champion Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons devoured the smaller and all-rookie laden University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 95-65.

Leading most of the way, the Magis Eagles saw their big lead chopped to just five points, 62-57, with still plenty of time to spare in the fourth period.

Sensing danger, the Magis Eagles exploited their height advantage to make sure there would be no rallying magic for the Wildkittens.

Aaron Sing drilled in a 3-pointer to spark Ateneo's spirited rally. Dawn Ochea, Julius Cadavis and Joshua Ong later joined the fray to restore their imposing 72-57 lead.

Ochea and Cadavis scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Magis Eagles, while Dave Yu and Sing chipped in 23 markers combined. They have now sport a 2-0 win-loss record as against the Wildkitten's 1-1.

Jeraldvin Delima, one of CIT-U's big men, topscored with 19 points even as three other teammates finished in double figures.

Earlier, Alfred Anecito Sedillo led the 1-1 Dragons with 25 points, while Luther Huevos and Michael Lorenzo Balankig added 16 and 11 points.

The 0-2 Baby Warriors were led by Ian Ortega with 22 markers but none of his teammates scored more than six points. (FREEMAN)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors pulled one of the biggest upsets in the 11th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament late Saturday.

The Warriors came from behind to pull the rug from under early favorite Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 65-63, at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the other collegiate game, nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers eased into a tie of the lead after toying with Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 71-63.

The Warriors raced from 11 points down midway through the fourth quarter and used a paralyzing 10-0 run to outscore the Cobras 16-3 in the final stretch to pull the win.

Celebrated Cobras’ rookie Justin Aboude gave his team their last taste of the lead after he split his charities off a foul by Sam Hermosa, 61-59, still 1:37 left.

When Aboude was fouled again by Hermosa, his fifth resulting to his fouling out, the rest of the Warriors joined Hermosa in protesting the call. They claimed it was Aboude, who initiated the contact.

The foul later turned out to be a good one to give as Aboude bungled both attempts.

The Warriors grabbed the lead for the first time when Giovanni Padillo drained a crucial triple, 62-61, time down to the final one minute.

Padillo later scored three more three throws for the Warriors to help his team in scoring an upset.

After taking a 12-10 edge at the end of the first period, the Warriors also led at the turn, 28-27 until the Cobras made a reversal in the third period.

SWU’s biggest lead was at 11 points when Rene Pacquaio completed a three-point play at the 5:16 mark of the final canto.

Padillo led the Warriors with 16 points while June Michael Cantonao, who was part of the furious comeback late in the fourth quarter, added 14 points while Nilton John Otida added 12 points.

The Warriors who now hold a 1-1 win-loss record were just fortunate enough the Cobras missed three straight attempts in the final one minute including two missed free throws by Bernie Bregondo and two close-to-the-basket shots from Aboude and Eleazar Armecin.

Pacquiao who did not finish the game because of a minor injury, led the Cobras also with 16 points while Aboude and Bonifacio Guillena, Jr. added 11 and 10 points as they spoiled the CESAFI coaching debut of Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.

Earlier, Edrian Lao was unstoppable at the post and led the 2-0 Lancers with 17 points. The Lancers are now tied at the top spot with idle University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, who are in Shenzhen, China to campaign in the 26th Universiade, a gathering of university athletes worldwide.

Allan Dimco also finished with 17 points to lead the Wildcats while Floyd Taboada added 15 markers.

SHENZHEN, China — The Philippines, represented by CESAFI champion University of Cebu, struggled against mighty Russia, losing 47-105, in the 26th Summer Universiade Sunday at the Pingshan Sports Center here.

A day after absorbing a 59-108 beating from Lithuania, the Filipinos labored heavily against the taller and heftier Russian team built around two 7-foot and three 6-9 players and were badly outclassed in all departments of the game.

Junemar Fajardo, at 6-foot-11 the tallest Filipino in the coach Rhoel Gomez-mentored Cebuano team, tried desperately to keep the Filipino pride alive and battled Russia’s “Twin Towers” of 7-foot-1 Anatoly Kashirov and 7-foot Alexey Kurtsevich despite playing with four fouls most of the way.

THE defending high school champions Cebu Eastern (CEC) Dragons showed its true form after a dominant performance against Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Graywolves last night in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.


After dropping its opening game against the University of the Visayas (UV), CEC logged its second straight victory after a 92-59 landslide over DBTC.

The Graywolves was up, 36-31, at halftime. But the Dragons turned the tide around and started a 19-2 run in the third for a commanding 51-38 lead. CEC outscored DBTC, 29-14, in that quarter.


The fourth was no different as the Dragons continued to pressure DBTC and forced the latter to frequently turn the ball over and convert it to baskets.


Alfred Sedillo was the go-to-guy for CEC and had a dominant offensive performance with 26 points, scoring 12 of those in the fourth. James Sumayang was also a force in the paint and added 17 for the Dragons.


Stephen Niere, on the other hand, led DBTC with 11 points.


CEC improved to 2-1, trailing behind unbeaten teams Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles and UV at third place in the rankings. Meanwhile, DBTC dropped its first game for a 0-1 record.
