here's my so-called review. my writing is crappy though. anyway...
there's something about brit rock. there's something about its dreamy and poetic resonance. there's something about its melancholy. there's something about keane. listening to it for the first time made quite an impression. it's so different from their first album and a lot more darker and heavier. i have to say the album artwork is fantastic.
"i lost my heart, i buried it too deep, under the iron sea..." goes a line from the song called "crystal ball", one of my favorites, from which the album obviously got its title. after playing the CD time and time again for more than a month now, i've come to love it. my top favorite is a song called "the frog prince" which has a fairy-tale feel to it, just the way i like it when it comes to keane. a song called "leaving so soon?" gets my b**** approval as it goes "a slap in the face, in the face for you now, just might do now..."
"atlantic" sets you in the mood for the album's entire feel while "nothing in my way" has a really catchy chorus. the hidden title track called "the iron sea" is a short instrumental that sounds gothic, like a background to a dramatic movie. the song "is it any wonder?" is about war and it does sound like it has a guitar in it but keane doesn't use guitars. they used piano distortions that sound like electric guitars. amazing. "put it behind you" is an uptempo and happy track which is somehow a break from the rest of the songs and its placement in the middle of the album is a good choice.
as keane puts it, "under the iron sea" is a sinister fairy tale gone wrong which is an apt description to the album's entirety. i recommend it to those seeking some dose of musical catharsis.
