Di jud magdaog ang debate dinhi kung dili magsukad sa usa ka Premise: The Freedom of One ends when the Freedom of Others begin.

Ang problema sa "Artist in question" kay he never thought twice about the consequences of his art work. A responsible artist contributes to the common good of the society .. not divides it. The idea of Phallic symbols as a tool for art is good .. but why should an artist provoke the religious sense of the society by using the images held sacred by many, long revered in the Filipino traditions and psyche .. and super imposed them with p e n i s, condoms, etc .. and explain them as signifying "authority"? He could have drawn a big bellied "prayle" with a big boner .. and nobody will be against it .. if he supposes corruption of power and authority? It is one thing to criticize the church of power .. and another thing to insult the religious sense of the people ... No matter how the artist would explain it .. he has gone over board his sense of artistic freedom .. and maybe, he got the very thing he really wanted: media coverage and people talking, even quarreling, about his works.
The Philippines have so many great artists, even non believers, and they are a class apart! This one, I am sorry, has still to get out of his shell of arrogance and stubbornness.
In all these hullabaloo, albeit negative, came one good thing: that the people's sense of religiosity is deep seated .. and would unite to condemn those who desecrate it.

you've hit it right on the head there. what is happening here is the church is doing its utmost best to protect its teachings. it can't afford people like you to open your mind and see if their teachings are really that good for you or for anyone, really.

To which of the following truly glorifies God?

a.) kissing Jesus/Mary's statue 100 times a day

b.) opening your heart to your neighbor through an open mind

Why are you so concerned at these statues? Mideo Cruz used a lot of symbolism in his works. Those 'holy images' symbolize the Spanish colonization in the philippines. Catholicism is a clear indicator that the Spaniards came. Can you replace another physical object to symbolize the Spanish regime?
