The best ready-to-drink milk
by Harold Geronimo
During the past two years, I’ve been constantly searching for a ready-to-drink milk product that fits my healthy lifestyle. It’s quite a hard task to test every milk product available in groceries and supermarkets, and to finally settle down for what best works for the body. Those who regularly go to the gym would understand how important milk supplements are in helping them achieve the body they’ve wished to have. Milk supplements provide the body with protein that helps build muscles as well as calcium for strong and healthy bones. After all these years, I’ve finally come up with my verdict for the best recommended ready-to-drink milk products that I want to share to the health buffs.
1. Devondale Skim Milk
The brand Devondale is very popular in Australia, the country known for being one of the best producers of fresh cow’s milk in the world. I’ve never thought that I would be able to find their liquid milk products in our local supermarkets until late last year. Since then I’ve been a loyal drinker of this brand. Perfect for gym buffs, Devondale Skim Milk is 99.9% fat free or only about 0.3 grams of fat per 250 mL. On the other hand, it contains 9 grams of protein per serving which is relatively higher than any other milk brands. Moreso, it contains just 95 calories per serving so you don’t have to worry about spending too much time for cardio to burn them. Among all the milk products I’ve tried, Devondale has the best taste so far. Price ranges from P58 to P62 for a liter pack.
2. Nestle Low Fat
If you look at the label of Nestle Low Fat Milk, it tells the consumers that they get 86% of the daily calcium needs with less fat by taking two glasses of milk everyday. This is a good reminder especially to those who are so conscious about the benefits of what they eat and drink. Nestle Low Fat has been my favorite for almost two years now. Since I’m not really a fan of powdered protein supplements for muscle building, this milk product is my alternative every after work out. It contains 8.8 grams of protein per 250 mL serving which is about 13% of the Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intake (RENI) for adults. When it comes to wellness, I trust Nestle so I know I get the best especially when it comes to milk. Price ranges from P69 to P72 for a liter pack.
3. Alaska Slim
When I was ten years old, I remember my grandmother telling me to drink Alaska everyday. That was the powdered milk that is usually served hot just before I sleep. Today, Alaska stays to be a strong brand, and it has even expanded its products to cater to adults especially those who are engaged in active lifestyle. Its Alaska Slim milk product has become an instant hit among supermarket shoppers today because it is more affordable than any other ready-to-drink milk brands in the market today. Positioned as an “everyday fitness companion,” Alaska Slim’s packaging design showing a tape measure says it all about the benefits of drinking low fat milk. Aside from being a rich source of protein and calcium, this ultra heat treated milk product from New Zealand is also energy-packed. Price ranges from P57 to P60 per liter pack.
4. Country Goodness Calci Xtra
We need strong bones for endurance and strength during intense work out routines. Otherwise, we will be prone to fractures and other types of injuries. Gym rats like me as well as athletes and body builders need supplements that have high levels of calcium. So when I discovered New Zealand’s Country Goodness Calci Xtra Milk, it has become my calcium booster before heading to the gym. Two glasses of this milk everyday already meet the recommended dietary allowance of calcium for adults. Compared to other ready-to-drink milk products, Country Goodness Calci Xtra Milk is a little more expensive but it still has the best value for its nutritional benefits. Aside from the enhanced calcium level, it is also very high in protein at 11.4 grams per 200 mL. It has one of the highest protein levels per serving among the liquid milk products that I’ve seen in the local supermarkets. Price ranges from P72 to P78 per liter pack.
5. Cowhead Lite
During the China milk scandal almost two years ago, several milk products have been banned in the country. This has benefitted liquid milk products from New Zealand especially Cowhead. When it introduced its Low Fat High Calcium variant known as Cowhead Lite, it became my family’s instant favorite. Its maximum milk fat content is just 1.5 grams per serving while its protein content is at 8.8 grams per serving. Recently, it has been given the Superbrands seal for being one of the most trusted milk brands today. Undoubtedly, Cowhead is competing quite very well among other local brands in the market. Every time I go to supermarkets, it’s either out of stock or I’m left with just a few pieces. Price ranges from P72 to P75 per liter pack.
