I love the scene where there was...

    Spoiler!

...a news report of the spacecraft Icarus about to enter Mars orbit, to become the first Manned Landing on Mars (I bet most of you missed that, or didn't realize the significance or connection of that event to the storyline/franchise, but it's a critical piece of the rebooted franchise's puzzle and new storyline)...hints of exciting things to come.

My only nitpick is the profession they chose for the douchebag neighbor dad.
    Spoiler!

I mean most if not all of the airline pilots I know are NICE people! Really! And I hate the fact that it was HE who started the plague LOL *shakes head*

I wonder why Hollywood is calling this a Prequel?

Aren't prequels supposed to be movies that explain/show the events that transpired and which led to the current situation of a movie that's shown before?

Ex: Star Wars EP IV, V and VI which were shown first...and then the Prequel Star Wars movies came out (Ep I, II, III) years /decades later to explain how the events/situations at EP IV, V, VI came to be.

Anyone can call it what they want. It's a prequel because, based on your description above, it could work like this:
    a) The first remake was made in 2001 (Mark Wahlberg)

    b) Since the events in this movie happened before the Mark Wahlberg movie, then it's indeed a prequel movie.

However, another school of thought is the "reboot/restart/rethink" class of thinking. In this idea, we forget the 2001 movie. Instead, we see this:

    1. A new "Part I" (Rise, which was loosely based on the 4th movie 1972 "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes")

    2. A new "Part II" (The Planet of the Apes, based on the 1968 "The Planet of the Apes")

    3. A possible Part III or Part IV (totally new storylines)
