Rest easy, Kaubang Manny!
MANILA, Philippines – Rock guitarist Manny Amador, known to some as the loudest guitarist to play around these parts, has been found dead. He was 49.
A report on abscbnnews.com said that the guitarist’s body was discovered late Friday morning inside his rented apartment unit in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City. Initial investigation showed that he succumbed to cardiac arrest triggered by complications relating to diabetes.
Born Emmanuel Roxas Amador, he was named as one of the 10 most influential Filipinos on the Internet in 1999. He is one of the founders of the Philippine League for Democratic Telecommunications, Inc. (PLDTi) –which opposed the telephone metering system that the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) had been proposing then.
In an interview with magazine Wired Philippines, Amador said, "In the short term, we will fight tooth and nail against the imposition of mandatory metering on local calls. For the future, however, we intend to work on the dismantling of monopolistic structures in telecommunications and related sectors."
"These may sound like lofty goals for a small organization that doesn't have enough money to place an ad in the papers, but I believe that being on the side of truth and justice brings with it blessings and moral strength."
PLDT's proposal was eventually shot down by the senate.
Prior, Amador, older brother of actress Pinky Amador, made his mark as the lead guitarist of the alternative rock band The Breed. The band gained fame when they released the single, “Black Mercedes Benz,” followed by their debut album, “Free,” in 1995.
Amador left the group a year later to carve a niche in the then-yet to bloom local IT scene.
In the past years, he was seen playing occasional gigs with the three-piece classic rock group, Wall of Sound. He then relocated to Cebu to work with open-source firm, InfoWeapons.
A prolific writer, he was also maintaining at least three blogs and was a correspondent for an IT publication.
Prior to his death, Amador was also playing guitar for the acoustic rock group, MNX. He also tooled with motorbikes and vintage cars.
He was a graduate of Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU).
