Using a reversing ring on a Canon DSLR is a pain. Since most Canon kitlens have no aperture ring, setting the lens aperture is cumbersome. Even if it were easy to set the lens aperture, using the reversing ring will also expose the rear of the DSLR lens and the contacts to the elements. Fortunately for me, I have an old Nikkor 35-70 f3.5-4.5 zoom lens on my retired Nikon FM2 film SLR. So I bought a reversing ring, a 52-58mm step up adapter and set them up as pictured below(actual ni nga pic):
Now, I can set my lens aperture manually and can even preview the depth of field. I can also zoom in and out.

Now my kitlens can breathe a sigh of relief.
