just get a galaxy tab, put co pilot and mount in your car and you're ready to go. You not only have a GPS navigator but a fully functional tablet that does other stuff. For me, those stand alone GPS devices are overpriced and does only one thing...

From my experience, the current map for Philippines used by co-pilot has ways to go before it can catch up roadguide.ph current contributor map in terms of pois and routing. But if one doesn't want to get another gadget then I those android apps using outdated maps (when compared to roadguide.ph contributor maps) will suffice.

Does the Galaxy Tab need an internet or some kind of 3G connection for it to be used as a GPS device? And do you connect for free just like the standalone GPS units?

Most Android GPS apps don't need internet connectivity to have map access. Current Google Maps, NavDroyd, CoPilot, Sygic, NDrive, etc just need GPS satellites and maps already loaded into memory cards. If you're going to use Galaxy Tab then use either use CoPilot or Sygic as kenz has done since I consider these two the best turn by turn nav app for now.

i noticed sygic has more updated maps like the roads in IT park. Sometimes there are no names but at least you see theres a roadway which will help you navigate unfamiliar places. also, i believe google maps have launched a new version wherein you can pre download maps to do away with data connections needed.
