i have friends who have joined who did not receive any invites...i got mine from a friend in the US when it was still exclusive for them...

It was never US only. Even the first batches included 40 languages in many countries.

you can actually set who can view your information.
Although most of the information are set on "anyone on the web"

you can change this by

Google+ settings > Profile and Privacy > Edit visibility on profile > click the circles and edit
