50 violators of waste segregation law nabbed
A WEEK after the implementation of the "No segregation, no collection" policy, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) has arrested a total of 50 violators in Davao City.
Lawyer Joseph Felizarta, Cenro officer-in-charge, said for areas that have been adversely affected by the flashfloods, such as NHA Kadayawan, Matina Pangi, and Matina Aplaya, the implementation of the policy has been postponed.
For barangays that are required to follow the policy, their teams alongside with the deputized barangay officials have been tasked to arrest violators.
On the first offense, each violator will have to pay P300 fine aside from the one-hour mandatory segregation lecture that will be conducted by barangay officials and Cenro; for the second offense, violators will have to pay P500 fine or five days community service (eight hours per day); for the third offense, a P1,000 fine or 10 days community service; and a court case will be filed before the court for the 4th offenders.
"Duha ka instances na pwede 'mi mag saka ug kaso sa korte, una sa fourth offense or kung dili sila maka bayad sa (should the violators fail to pay the) fine sa first to the fourth offense," Felizarta said.
Felizarta said that in the poblacion areas, from Sasa in the north to Matina in the south, Cenro will collect only the segregated garbage.
He said for barangays in districts two and three, Cenro will only collect residual wastes including bulbs, sanitary napkins, diapers, canisters, and other wastes that cannot be sold.
Felizarta commended those barangays that are doing well in the implementation of the segregation policy such as Barangays Paciano Bangoy, Bangkerohan, and Centro Agdao, among others.
The city's implementation of the proper segregation policy is part of its compliance with the Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Solid Waste Management Act of the Philippines.
Davao City is among those few cities that first adopted the law.
