For those waiting for the return of Leverage to their TVs, the wait is almost over. The fourth season of the show will premiere for its summer run on this Sunday, June 26. What will be in store for our favorite justice-loving criminals? Thanks to Leverage's executive producer, Dean Devlin, we have some answers for you.
Devlin spoke to BuddyTV this week about the show's past and future, letting us know a whole lot about what's in store for the Leverage team in season 4.
Consequences
First and foremost, according to Dean Devlin: "This is the year of consequences." This means consequences for both the team's actions and their personal choices. After all, we're talking about a group that has been getting away with criminal activity for years -- sooner or later that's got to catch up with them.
On a personal front, the various relationships between the characters will need to be addressed. Earlier this month, actor Aldis Hodge (who plays Hardison) talked about how his character and Parker would be dealing with the personal tension between the two of them. Devlin adds Nate and Sophie to the relationship-issues club by recalling the season-3 finale, in which the two ended up together in bed. Devlin says: "That's going to hang over the whole season this year."
What Can We Expect in Season 4?
At 18 episodes, season 4 will be the longest in Leverage's run, bringing the promise of plenty of new twists and turns on the road to justice.
With all of that freedom, the show has been able to shake up the basic format a little: "We didn't want it to always be about a suitcase full of money," notes Devlin. As a result, viewers can expect episodes that:
Flash back to World War II
Occur during a murder-mystery weekend
Take place in a funeral parlor
This is in addition to the premiere episode, which finds the team working a case at the top of a mountain. In a blizzard. As it turns out, the mountain was planned but the snow was not. The weather was so bad, in fact, that Devlin compared the shoot to The Shining: "Imagine being in that hotel and the power going out every night." Leverage's set was constantly under threat from avalanches -- three days after shooting wrapped, an avalanche actually took out the area where they were filming!
The Leverage team did make it, however, freeing them to take on a whole host of evildoers throughout the season ("We never run out of bad guys," say Devlin). This means guest stars. The most prominent of those stars may be Danny Glover, appearing later in the season. Dean Devlin points to Glover as "one of the most powerful, beautiful performances we've ever had."
