Cloned Sony Walkman W250 audio player shows up in China
If what they say about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery is true, it would seem that SONY should be flattered about the latest news that is currently going on in China. Apparently, an enterprising OEM over there have decided that SONY's W-Series portable audio player had a design that was so unique, it just could not resist the urge to produce a near-perfect knockoff of the original.
It has been quite some time since we posted any news about the seemingly lucrative cloning business that China is known for, but rest assured that the scene there is anything abut quiet. In fact, it seems that enterprising OEMs over at China have decided move beyond their typical lineup of mobile phones, notebook PCs and tablets by roping in other consumer electronic devices to their list of potential candidates for cloning, and the most recent device to get the "friendly" treatment from China appears to be none other than Sony's very own W250 Walkman portable audio player:
According to an article published by MicDigi, the knockoff audio player boasts specifications that are similar to its legitimate counterpart, such as having heart-shaped earbuds crafted out of soft rubber and 2GB of storage space. That being said, the site neglected to mention whether the knockoff features the same high-quality, water-resistant body that is present on the actual Sony W-250 Walkman portable audio player, although we suspect that it does not. In addition, the maximum battery uptime on both devices appear to be vastly different; while Sony claims that its W-250 is capable of up to 11 hours of audio playback on a single charge, MicDigi's report suggests that the knockoff is only capable of achieving a maximum uptime of approximately two to three hours.
However, as it has always been the case with such knockoff devices, there is one aspect of the this cloned portable audio player which everybody will have to concede is far superior to the original W-250, and that is the size of its price tag. While Sony is charging no less than US$60 for the right to own one of its sports-hardened W-250 portable audio players, this particular clone from China can be purchased at the price of...wait for it...
US$4.60. And no, we are not making this up.
