Pingoy is in FEU. High school pa 'to.

Adven Diputado of SHS Ateneo de Cebu is now with San Beda Red Cubs together with two other SHS ADC players, Reggie Abbu (Team B due to residency) and A.G. Araw Araw (Team A). Diputado is in the under 16 national team. Another SHS AdC guard, Henry Asilum, is now with National University's high school team and plays with the under 16 national team as well. 4 young players that would have been part of SHS AdC's Cesafi (under 18, high school) Juniors team. Fear not, the other young players are stepping up. This coming Cesafi, SHS AdC will again field the youngest team.

    GREG SLAUGHTER IN THE NEWS
Tall rookies tipped to steal show in Ateneo-La Salle duel12:20 am | Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

MANILA—Prized rookies get a taste of varsity’s fiercest rivalry in the first summer clash between Ateneo and La Salle in the FilOil-Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup on Saturday.

Although the spotlight is expected to fall on Ateneo’s freshman star Kiefer Ravena, the towering new recruits of the Blue Eagles and the Green Archers will steal attention in the 4 p.m. blockbuster battle at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Archers have beefed up with Arnold Van Opstal, a 6-foot-8 former Junior Archer; 6-6 Fil-Canadian Norbert Torres, a former national youth team ace; and 6-4 Ponso Gotladera, an ex-San Beda Red Cub.

Greg Slaughter, the 6-11 Smart Gilas mainstay, has also boosted Ateneo’s frontline that includes veterans JP Erram and Justin Chua.

Tickets to the game are sold separately from the 12:30 p.m. clash between San Beda and Santo Tomas.

The Eagles, bannered by Kirk Long and Nico Salva, aim to wrap up their elimination run with a victory even after securing a quarterfinal berth in Group A with a 5-1 record.

But the game remains crucial for the Archers, who are running sixth with a 2-3 card.

With only two quarterfinal berths left in Group A, the Archers hope to prop up their bid versus the Eagles and also against the winless Lyceum at 2:15 p.m. today in San Juan.

Powerhouse San Beda (3-2), also fighting for a Final Eight slot in Group A, tangles with San Sebastian (5-1) at 12:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Finals.

Mapua (4-3) tries to nail Group B’s last quarterfinal berth against the University of the Philippines (5-2).

    Tallo leaves Ateneo
    By Jonas Panerio
    Cebu Daily News

    7:47 am | Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The stint of Cebuano basketball prodigy Mark Jayven Tallo with the three-time UAAP defending champions, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, is over.

This, after the former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) and Jr. NBA MVP packed up his bags and went back home here in Cebu as a result of his displeasure with his role and playing time or lack thereof with the backcourt-heavy Eagles.

His departure was confirmed by none other than Ateneo head coach Norman Black along with former University of the Visayas star center and current Ateneo slotman Greg Slaughter. Black said yesterday he was disappointed with Tallo’s departure from the squad.

“Obviously, I’m very disappointed that he left. He had his free will and I had no say in his decision to leave. I would say that he couldn’t fit in the system. He started practicing with us in April and the system that we are running is a lot more complicated than most people think,” Black said. “I would say that Mark was very impatient and wanted playing time instantly.”

The affable head coach also clarified that his current Eagles squad has a logjam at the perimeter positions and said that had Tallo been patient, he would’ve been able to get as much playing time as he wanted.

“Majority of the players that we recruit here don’t become stars instantly. How it goes is that the older guys graduate and the younger stars step in. We have five guards graduating next year and this includes Kirk Long, Emman Monfort and Zags Gonzaga among others. The decision not to play him had nothing to do with his talent. I recruited him in good faith and I wanted him to stay. He just did not learn the system yet but we were willing to give him time to do that but we never really got to that point,” added Black.

Slaughter, also a rookie with the Eagles, was also saddened with his fellow Cebuano’s departure from the team. “He just packed up and left. It’s his decision. There’s nothing I can do about it. It’s hard to see him go but we can’t let that distract us from preparing for the UAAP,” said Slaughter.

    LOST CONFIDENCE

Tallo’s father, Mark, though, alleged that Black ruined his son’s confidence by not playing him, hence the latter decided to just go back home. “Nadaut ang kumpiyansa sa bata kay wala may duwa-duwa. Maski banga ang kontra like Mapua, wala gihapon niya gamita,” said the elder Tallo, referring to Ateneo’s quarterfinal game against Mapua wherein Mark Jayven did not see any playing time. That incident, Mark said, prompted his son to leave the school.

Black, though, defended himself and put the issue to rest.

“Yes, I spoke to him before that game because Mark was telling his teammates that he was going home because he can’t help the team if he isn’t seeing any court time. I talked to him and told him to just be patient and Mark understood that. From what I gathered, the father felt insulted and told his son to just go home. I did no such thing. I felt we understood one another but apparently, we didn’t. We don’t have a choice but to move on.”

With his departure, other schools have come calling for Tallo’s services, including the University of the Philippines, La Salle, Arellano University and San Beda among others. The youngster though, appears intent on skipping school this year and just train here and abroad.

Norman Black has groomed the likes of Chris Tiu, LA Tenorio, Larry Fonacier, and Rabeh Al-Hussaini in Ateneo (just to name a few) and even coached Japeth Aguilar once. Black has a proven record as a very good coach.

College is not all about showing off your skills alone. It is a period where you have to adjust and further improve what you've got. Nakapait aning uban kay gusto sikat dayun. With all due respect to the Tallos, di mahimong sikat dayun si Jayven just because maayo siya moduwa. The fact that Ateneo got him is more than enough for now to prove nga maayo gyud siya. Only that Ateneo has older players nga familiar na kaayo sa system and at the same time should improve their stock para makasaka sa another level which is either go to the pro or other commercial leagues.

Mao lagi ni basta matandog ang garbo. Hopefully the Tallos have made the right decision.

    Slaughter 'violates' rule on eligibility?
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated June 23, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (10)

    Greg Slaughter

MANILA, Philippines - Opposition to Big man Greg Slaughter’s much-anticipated UAAP stint mounts as some members of the eligibility committee are reportedly keen on pursuing the issue that the former University of Visayas standout “violated” a residency rule by playing for the national team.

The UAAP prohibits players serving their residency to suit up for other teams in other leagues.

Ateneo, through Season 74 UAAP president Ricky Palou, maintained that Slaughter’s stint with the Smart Gilas Phl squad in last year’s Asian Games should not affect his eligibility as the rule applies to those playing for another team, not the national squad.

But a source claimed that while the UAAP indeed passed a clause allowing a player to see action for the Phl five while undergoing residency, it would only take effect this year.

“The board approved a clause that players undergoing residency could not play in any league ‘except for the national team’ in its last board meeting. But it was also clarified in the same meeting that the clause will be proactive, not retroactive, which means it could not correct or rectify past violations,” said The STAR source.

Slaughter has completed his one-year residency required for transferees. But according to the source, Ateneo reportedly failed to ask the UAAP for permission to allow the former Lancer to play for Smart Gilas in the 2010 Guangzhou Asiad squad.

A clear violation of residency rules is equivalent to a penalty of another year, said the source. This would prevent Slaughter, who led UV to four straight championships, from joining the Eagles in their quest for a four-peat feat this year.

Palou explained in last Tuesday’s PSA Forum that Slaughter should be exempted because he played for flag and country.

The eligibility committee chaired by UP Dean Lailani Gonzalo will approve with finality all the players who would be allowed or disallowed to play in Season 74 in a meeting on June 28.

The said committee is also expected to tackle National U’s celebrated Fil-Am rookie Bobby “Ray Ray” Parks, Jr.’s status.

The board, incidentally, is also composed of representatives from UP, La Salle, Far Eastern U, Adamson and Ateneo. But Ateneo would have to inhibit itself should the Slaughter case be brought up.

The full board, composed of school heads and representatives, will then approve everything on July 5, four days before the UAAP cage wars unfurls at the Araneta Coliseum.

You said it very well Makie. There is a right time for everything. Maayo unta if Jayven waited. i do hope that the family made the right decision too. If i have a child who sits on the bench of the Blue Eagles' team as a rookie, i will be very happy already. He would have nothing to prove. All he needs to do is to learn for when his time comes to lead.

Now that the boy is out of Ateneo, the next best coach who can mould him really well in a serious and cash loaded program is Eric ALtamirano of N.U. But then Eric is also all about the system and not the player so murag lisud ra gihapon for Jayven's handlers. The bulldogs need a better point guard because Labingisa is undersized and Terso is erratic. Jayven could fill the slot easily, playing time and all. No question about his ability to play the position. The question is why isn't N.U. courting him?

Kung sa DLSU lang siya mu-adto, Ravena vs. Tallo? IF it happens Ravena will win hands down. Kiefer plays more maturely and has learned to be his own man. Monfort and Tiongson will be the guys that will make life miserable for Jayven. The Archers is a team in the process of rebuilding.... wrong team for him to join, murag demotion man ang mugawas. Akoa pa, mag CIT na lang siguro siya.... prove his mark by bringing the wildcats to Cesafi glory then just like Greg... return to Ateneo when he is ready. This time humbler and wiser for the better. At 17, he still has 8 years to play in the UAAP, which allows players to play until they are 25. Think of Chris Tiu as an example.
