Default NY Gov. Cuomo signs gay marriage law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Same-*** marriage is now legal in New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that was narrowly passed by state lawmakers Friday, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the gay rights movement was born.
New York becomes the sixth state where gay couples can wed and the biggest by far.
"We are leaders and we join other proud states that recognize our families and the battle will now go on in other states," said Sen. Thomas Duane, a Democrat.
Gay rights advocates are hoping the vote will galvanize the movement around the country and help it regain momentum after an almost identical bill was defeated here in 2009 and similar measures failed in 2010 in New Jersey and this year in Maryland and Rhode Island.
"Once this is signed into law, the population of the United States living under marriage equality doubles," said Ross Levi, executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda in an interview. "That's certainly going to have a ripple effect across the nation. It's truly a historic night for love, our families, and democracy won."
Jerry Nathan of Albany, who married his partner in Massachusetts, called the vote "an incredible culmination of so much that's been going on for so many years it doesn't seem real yet" as he stood outside the Senate chamber afterward.
"But it's the next chapter, I guess, in public acceptance and some kind of maturity in our state, and hopefully the rest of the country, too," Nathan said.
Though New York is a relative latecomer in allowing gay marriage, it is considered an important prize for advocates, given the state's size, New York City's international stature. The gay rights movement is considered to have started with the Stonewall riots in New York City's Greenwich Village in 1969.

    hala bira!

but seriously, am surprised why NY wasn't the first to approve such a measure since this is the birthplace of said movement.

No harm, no foul. Gay people also deserve the happiness and misery marriage can offer.

Personally I'm not in favor with same *** marriage, but as New Yorker I'm really tired of all these issues. As long as they( LGBT) do not bother me then they can live their life they choose... Still I don't agree with their lifestyles.

bidli lang sometimes looking at men doing those things (pictures two guys doing things...). sends chills all over my body when I see one... I will never get used to the sight.

thats the reason i dont go out on festival nights in Mandaue before. They always bring in these Miss Gay contests and men wanting to be girls parade on stage wearing skimpy clothes.

I have nothing against gay people. I just wish they aren't.

during my college psyc class a teacher once said; sometimes what we most hate about the other person is what we are inside.. so gay haters, be careful.. nyehehehe.. ;-0

OnT: the passage of this bill simply confirms that US political arena is just almost the same with the philippines. Money is of important consideration. Its just that they (US) have better rules and regulations for lobby funds, campaign contributions, etc.

really? well, If that would be true and would be the case of the debate. you will never see me walking around town wearing skimpy clothes, entering miss gay and doing same s3x marrage just to practice my freedom of religion, or mayhaps to broadcast I love a pare and we are not contented living together that we have to get married too.
