PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, 07 June (PIA) -- President Benigno S. Aquino officially announced yesterday the stunning discovery of a 20 million year old fossil of a sea cow inside the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) further affirming the park and the country’s historic value to the world. The President made the announcement in yesterday’s launching ceremony of the PPUR national and international campaign at Malacanang Ceremonial Hall.
“Aside from its staggering length and shape, within it lie unique discoveries, which were, until recently, unknown even to those who had frequented the site,” said the President.
The discovery of the fossil was made by the La Venta Geographical Exploration, an Italian team who has been studying and exploring the internal and external environment of the PPUR for years now.
Apart from the fossil, La Venta also discovered the presence of a crystal forest in one of the caves in the highest parts of the limestone massif of the PPUR.
Both discoveries are putting more interests in visiting the park. It is expected to further boost the tourist arrivals in PPUR and Puerto Princesa City which was recorded at its highest last year at 450,000 visitors.
In the same event, La Venta recognized and attested that PPUR represents one of the most important underground estuaries in the world; it holds a complex and valuable karst system; contains scientifically and aesthetically unique speleothems, and hosts peculiar macro and micro karst morpheologies.
The Puerto Princesa Underground River was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
