guys i'd like to pose this question to all of you..please read this article and tell me what do you think?
in my opinion Amid has a point..i've always been a staunch supporter of PURE animation pero with all the technologies coming outta the woodwork (thought not all are good)i think i have to reconsider my current beliefs.. animation is indeed an evolving art form..for me i've always considered it as an ART FORM rather than a flimsy attempt at copying life.

3d animation pipeline? Knowing how to draw doesn't apply to the rest of the pipeline, specifically after the shots have gone through layout and anim. More so when it comes to our department and is then passed to lighting and comp.

No self-respecting animator would ever put a stamp with his/her name on a shot that's been done solely on mocap and the work needed is just smoothing out all the curves. That is why it is also annoying to hear that most people give all the credit to Andy Serkis for his portrayal of Gollum in the LOTR franchise when all that mocap data was painstakingly tweaked keyframe by keyframe by the animation department in WETA. As far as TinTin goes, which I read when I was a kid, I'm truly excited for it and I don't think it will fall in the uncanny valley and suffer the same fate as the previous Robert Zemeckis films.

mao lagi..anha nlang jd kas technical aspect sa animation and you would never be put into another department if you don't know how to draw..though i have great respect to technical leads kai sila gd na ang responsible sa tanang effects..though im no expert ana..

pero i've watched the entire bonus dvd sa The Incredibles and grabe ka importante ang technical department..i have my respects to them..ang akoa lang point is..if dli ka kabaw mu draw aw..diha rajd kas technical aspect ibutang hinoon paywise..dagko pd cguro ug sweldo nang mga technical positions sa isa ka full 3d animation feature..ang akoa is flexibility ba sa imong skillset..3d animation may not wholly require people who knows how to draw pero it would be good to have that skill and not use it than not have it at all.

All classic animation directors knows how to draw and most of them started as an assistant..Chuck Jones started as a cell washer..then took figure drawing classes at night and then became an assistant eventually becoming a legendary director. Friz Freleng started at Disney then took the reins of a fledgeling animation unit started by Leon Schlesinger. Now all of these people gave an effort to uplift their status..though nag work na sila sa animation pero they aspired for more..so ni learn sila ug draw..unlike karn na mahimo nakang animation director maskn nag wla kai alamag sa pag drawing ug pag animate...

pero that's the past nman..karn kai pwede nman ka maka work sa animation and at the same time be completely immersed in the process even without knowing how to draw..i don't have anything against them..pero it'd be nice if they have time to spare they should learn how to draw kai gamit jd baya na..in giving your ideas to your director or head..sa animation raba..we don't explain but draw it instead.

yeah sakto ka ana bai..it's not all Andy Serkis..but also to the whole Gollum team sa Weta...pero sa akoang opinion when it comes to Tintin...this all i can say jd..

3D animation is a brand new concept in today's ever changing landscape of animation i respect it i love it..most of the time...pero no offense sa mga creators sa Tintin..pero grabe nman pd oi!..i know they're pushing the 3D artform to its limits pero there're some things na dli najd unta angay sagulan ana..i mean 3d is an artform..and it doesn't necessarily equate that all concepts or ideas becoming 3d is all good..para nako turning tintin into 3d with that same character designs is simply sacriligeous...3d is not a shirt or some outfit that you can slap into a doll or human..and call it good..para nako gud..by making any concept into 3d is a gargantuan effort and i applaud to that..pero it doesn't necessarily mean na tanang concept nga sagulan ug 3d munindot dayon automatic.

The art form should be used sparingly and with dignity and respect. Pixar never gave in to that temptation..being the pioneering studio in commercial 3d animated features they push the artform to its limits pero with respect..in respect to the creators of Tintin..all i can say is kudos to the effort i know grabe kaayo na sila ka maayo pero in my own humble opinion..hinay2x lang unta tag gamit sa 3d artform..turning any concept into a 3d format doesn't necessarily mean that it's good..technicalwise, technologywise it is commendable pero conceptwise it doesn't necessarily credit applause all the time. I am excited about Tintin technologywise, softwarewise sa technical 3d part..feels like im paying good money to see someone's experiments in 3d..experiments are good..but like all experiments sometimes test subjects are the ones who fall victim..cge nlang..for the glory of science!!!..hehe!

Not necessarily, if I remember correctly one of the Lead animators that made final fantasy XII advent children doesn't know how to draw. But my sources could be wrong since I was just talking to my peers about this. Also most of the animators I know (those who doesn't come from the classical 2d cel shading background) are not that great at drawing either. Don't get me wrong I'm all up for improving skillsets and I have nothing against pure 2d animations. I was merely clarifying that freehand drawing doesn't translate through the whole pipeline since you specifically said 3d animation pipeline.

This is the tricky part bai. I'll just post a video from Rick O'connor, one of ILM's anim supe, on animationmentor and he was just talking about this subject. By the way this has nothing to do with drawing and I just thought of sharing.
