    436 MILLION PEOPLES MONEY

Catholic church paid 436 mln dlrs for abuse cases
    (AFP) – Mar 13, 2009
WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US Roman Catholic church has paid out 436 million dollars in 2008 for *** abuse cases involving clergy members, according to an official report aimed at healing deep wounds of the scandal that blew up in 2002.
The bulk of the money -- more than 374 million dollars -- was paid out in settlements to victims, according to the report that tracks how well the church is implementing a charter to protect children.
The sums paid out in settlement had fallen 29 percent compared with the record 526 million dollars paid in 2007, the report showed.
Around 22 million dollars went to therapy for victims or support for accused offenders last year, showed the report, commissioned by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for the past six years.
While costs to the church related to the *** abuse scandal fell across the board, the number of new allegations and victims both rose by 16 percent, however.
The report showed that 803 new allegations of abuse -- over half of which were from children -- were lodged last year, compared with 692 in 2007.
Just over half of the new allegations involved abuse cases that were said by the accusers to have occurred or begun between 1960 and 1974. Most of the alleged perpetrators are either dead or no longer in ministry.
The report also said that the number of victims also rose, from 689 in 2007 to 796 in 2008.
Two-thirds of the victims were male, and more than half were under the age of 18 when the abuse occurred.
More than one in five victims was under age 10 when they were abused, and there were 10 new credible allegations of abuse last year to a person still under the age of 18, the report said.
The annual review tracks progress made in implementing the Charter for the Protection of Children, which was adopted by US bishops in 2002 after the institution plunged into crisis with the Archbishop of Boston's confession that he protected a priest he knew had sexually abused young members of his church.
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the USCCB, said in a statement Friday that the church was "on the right path" in its quest to better protect "all children in society."
But the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) faulted the report for focusing on victims of the abuse, while not highlighting "bishops who keep hiding crucial information about church pedophiles that could actually prevent future childhood trauma."
"Virtually no bishop holds anyone responsible for concealing predators," said SNAP official Barbara Dorris.
To compile the report and track compliance with the charter, the church conducted audits of the 195 dioceses and eparchies in the United States.
But seven dioceses and eparchies refused to be audited, including the Lincoln diocese in Nebraska, which has consistently blocked the church auditors.
"We're saddened but not surprised that once again Lincoln Catholic officials have chosen to not even do the bare minimum regarding child safety: participate in the annual review as mandated by the USCCB," said SNAP President Barbara Blaine in a statement.
"Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz claims the evaluation wouldn't 'place into context' the large number of priests who were not abusive.
"No one disputes that many priests lead truly admirable lives, but that does not negate the need to expose, bring to justice and protect kids from those clergy who commit horrific crimes against the innocent and the vulnerable," said Blaine, herself a victim of a predator priest when she was younger.
During a trip to the United States last year Pope Benedict XVI, the leader of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics, went out of his way to heal the wounds left by the *** scandal, saying he felt deeply ashamed by it.
He mentioned the scandal in nearly every homily and speech he gave during the six-day visit, and chastised the US church for its handling of it.

In the third-largest settlement to emerge from the child ***-abuse scandal that has shaken the Catholic Church, some $166 million will be paid to hundreds of Native Americans and Alaskan Natives who were abused as children at schools in the Pacific Northwest run by an order of Jesuit priests.

The settlement with the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus also calls for victims to receive a written apology and to receive documents from the order, including their medical records.

The order was accused of dumping pedophile priests at its schools in distant towns and villages in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

If you believe you or a loved one suffered some form of child abuse, you may want to contact an attorney to learn about your legal rights.

Catholic Church Settles With 700 Abuse, Rape Victims For $250 Million

"We were scared that if we uttered even one word, we would go to hell."

The Roman Catholic Church, as part of ongoing lawsuits, will make payments to approximately 700 male and female sexual and psychological abuse, molestation, and rape victims who were living in Alaska Native villages and Indian reservations from Montana to Washington, Idaho and Oregon, and who were “sexually or psychologically abused as children by Jesuit missionaries in those states in the 1940s through the 1990s,” according to a statement by attorneys.

The latest agreement will financially compensate 524 victims with $166.1 million in cases including accusations against 140 Jesuit priests, brothers, and nuns from the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus, in the Pacific Northwest. Only $48 million will come from the Catholic Church, the remainder will be paid by its insurance companies.

None of the Jesuit priests are being charged with any crime related to this abuse, rape, and molestation settlement.

The settlement comes through bankruptcy proceedings and is the largest by a religious order in the United States.

“These religious figures should have been responsible for protecting children, but instead raped and molested them,” plaintiffs’ attorney Blaine Tamaki noted, adding, “This settlement recognizes that the Jesuits betrayed the trust of hundreds of young children in their care, and inflicted terrible atrocities upon them.”

One victim, Katherine Mendez, according to The Oregonian, was “11 years old when she was raped at St. Mary’s Mission School in Omak, Wash., moments after she scuffled with another student and was then brought into the office of Father John J. Morse.

“The sexual abuse continued from sixth grade into eighth grade, she said.

“And even after Mendez left the school and moved in with a foster family in Selah, 200 miles away, the priest tracked her down to continue the abuse.

“Every day, every single day, it was a nightmare,” Mendez said today. “I was always looking over my shoulder.”

“The bankruptcy declaration seemed like a cheat,” she said. “I was really a victim of child rape. There was no face-to-face justice where I could see the accusations brought out in public, to say, ‘He’s the one who raped me.’”

Another victim, Theo Lawrence, who was molested by both a Jesuit priest and a nun, died two weeks ago, before the details of the settlement had been announced. Before his death, Lawrence said, “The nun or one of the Brothers would send me to the Rectory to see Father Freddy. He would give me candy or call me special — and then he would molest me. They all did at various times.”

Lawrence, explaining how priests kept their victims silent, said abused boys were told, “men of God don’t talk. We were scared that if we uttered even one word, we would go to hell.”

The abusers, often Jesuit priests, fathers, and nuns or nuns that worked with the Jesuits, abused boys and girls and were generally sent to Alaskan Native reservations and Indian reservations as punishment or to be hidden from prior misdeeds. The Order is accused of “dumping” “problem priests” on reservations over the course of about 50 years.

The Jesuits are the largest order within the Catholic Church and are considered the most-educated.

Allegations of sexual and psychological abuse, molestation, and rape of children by Catholic Church priests have been made in the United States, Ireland, Kenya, The Philippines, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, The Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru.

The Jesuits refused to comment on this case.

You have your facts sir pero ikaw ang wala ni stick sa topic. Look, from investments (thread topic), here you are googling about child abuse settlements. Come on it’s not news anymore, late reaction ka.. dugay nang nasayod ang mga tao ana, pero padayon silag visit sa Church kay in ana ka solid ilang faith despite the negatives nga binuhatan sa nagdumala, dili ang Church as a whole.

you want perfection from the Church with you penny? Sorry but you can’t have it.. tao rana sila, every organization has its flaws, even in family setting if sungayan ang isa ang tao mubuhat jud nag dautan regardless sa organization nga ilang gi represent. Mao bitaw ni conduct na ang Church recently og strict nga screening sa mga pari as part of their program to fight off the occurrence of exploitations in the future.

Acceptance of accountabilities. But promoting hatred is not good. Support?
Broaden your insights, don’t generalize.

You never mentioned but you make it sound na you can do better if only you have the power to take over the Church with your way of thinking.

they are handling the money right and the trust is their among members. audit not necessary.
