    Update: North Korea threatens Japan

North Korea has warned that it will take "strong countermeasures" against Japan if it goes ahead with sanctions against the country.

Tokyo said yesterday that it was banning all North Korean imports and barring the country's ships from Japanese ports. The measures are in addition to the raft of sanctions currently being discussed by the UN Security Council.

A senior North Korean diplomat told a Japanese news agency that the country's actions would not be tolerated.

"We will take strong countermeasures. The specific contents will become clear if you keep watching. We never speak empty words," he said.

The United States has begun pushing for a new UN resolution that adds a travel ban on North Korea, on top of the sanctions detailed in a early draft resolution circulated on Monday.

advertisementThe proposal uses softer language on cargo inspections and financial sanctions than the first draft, in an attempt to win Russian and Chinese support.

The new document also omits Japanese demands to prohibit North Korean ships from entering any port or North Korean aircraft from taking off or landing in any country. The proposals would likely face strong Russian and Chinese opposition.

North Korea turned a defiant face to the world yesterday, threatening to conduct more nuclear tests and to retaliate against any "harassment" by America.

The foreign ministry in Pyongyang said that sanctions would be regarded "as a declaration of war and we will take a series of physical counter-measures".

Kim Yong-nam, the regime's highest ranking figure after President Kim Jong-il, gave a rare interview, repeating the message in similar words and suggesting that more nuclear tests were possible.

"The issue of future nuclear tests is linked to US policy toward our country," the head of the country's parliament said.

His comments were the most belligerent by the secretive communist state since it declared that it had conducted a first nuclear weapons test on Monday in a mountain range in the north-east.

After two days of carefully avoiding inflammatory language, South Korea said that it was preparing for a possible attack by North Korea, which has been a separate entity since the end of the Second World War. Reports suggested that Seoul was seeking to obtain precision missiles capable of attacking North Korea storage facilities and intercepting incoming missiles.

The crisis brought out sharp differences between President George W Bush and Kofi Annan, the outgoing UN secretary general.

Mr Bush said at a White House press conference that he had "no intention of attacking" North Korea. But he repeatedly ruled out the bilateral talks Pyongyang wants. Hours earlier Mr Annan said that such talks were the only way to end the crisis. He said: "I have always argued that we should talk to parties whose behaviour we want to change."

Mr Bush, referring to previous direct talks, said: "The strategy did not work and I learned a lesson from that." He had decided that forging agreed positions with North Korea's neighbours was the most effective approach.

America has long had an embargo on the export of military material and recently started blocking overseas bank accounts of businesses with dealings in North Korea.

Thing is, Japan will impose the sanctions this Friday after approval from the Japanese Diet. Hold on to your seats folks...

.. USA is not afraid of China coz of it's military strenght... but US fears China's commercial potential. If the US is going to meddle in countries which have some relation with China for sure China will cease to trade with the US. tsk tsk tsk. USA is full of crap, they always want everybody to believe that they are the world's police , but they only stick their noses to any issues if they can gain something. To make it short

    IRAQ = OIL
    N. KOREA = TRADING TO CHINA.

NOKOR try to threaten JAPAN? wahahahahaha.......NOKOR wont last on a long term war in fact kabalo cla ana they dont have much resources to sustain their pathetic campaign give me a break! electronic battlefield they dont even stand a chance, ever wonder why the NATO forces would know if there's a missile test b4 there's an actual lunch by these rogue states? there's a very expensive US high tech aircraft who patrols 24/7 on the international airspace somewhere in the sea of japan who's main job is to eavesdrop any electronic transmission from those rogoue states such as NOKOR. And there are also B1 Lancer, B2 Spirit and the good old B52 bomber( all of this bombers always carry tactical nukes ) who is always on patrol 24/7 (on call, ready to strike in just 5 to 10 mins.) the US has been using this strategy ever since the cold war begun. And i bet NOKOR knows this, u know wat? this charlies are just bluffing by blogging their brags on some media outlets hahahhaha......so ngano gud tawn mo korog ang US and it's key allies sa kaning mga rogue states such as NOKOR.
