Jason Terry confidently got a championship trophy tattoo before the season

On Oct. 19, 2010 -- a day before a preseason game against the Orlando Magic -- guard DeShawn Stevenson had a get-together for his Mavericks teammates at his house.

Stevenson, who has an offseason home in Orlando, brought his chef and his personal tattoo artist for the players. It was a team-building exercise.

Stevenson's chest, neck and arms are covered with tattoos. He even has a few facial tattoos and two piercings in his chest. But despite all of his tattoos, what he saw teammate Jason Terry do was mind-boggling at the time.

Terry got one placed on his right biceps of the Larry O'Brien Trophy, given to the winner of the NBA championship.

"When he first got the tattoo, I said he was crazy," Stevenson said of the tattoo that is on the inside of Terry's arm. "I didn't say it to him. But I've never been to the [NBA Finals], and for him to have that now. Wow. And he got that tattoo in October, and it means a lot with what we've been through."

Heat player: Mark Cuban quiet because he's learned from 2006

    Mark Cuban's quiet time continues.

Now that they've gotten used to it, the Dallas Mavericks kind of like it this way.

"It's fine with me," Dirk Nowitzki said. "It should be all about the players."

The Mavs have roared into the NBA finals with Cuban taking the traditional, low-profile role of most team owners. Of course, Cuban has never been like most team owners, making himself part of the story pretty much from the day he went from buying season tickets to buying the club.

He's racked up more than $1 million in fines over his 11-year tenure, mostly for outspoken comments -- like berating the officials during the 2006 NBA finals in Miami, where his team returns for Game 1 on Monday night.

"Mark's a smart guy, one of the smartest I've ever been around," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "Like all of us, he has great humility and respect for the position that we're in right now. We're all doing everything we can to put ourselves in the best possible position to do well."

Cuban's silence began after Dallas won its first-round series against Portland. The Mavs are 9-1 since, so why mess with a good thing?

"Mark is a very vocal guy," Jason Kidd said. "He's going to say what he wants to say at the right time, but I think he's been a little been quiet during this playoff run."

Just to be clear, this is only a media silence. He chitchats with reporters, but has made only a few innocuous comments on the record. He has also remained active on Twitter, tweeting "Go Mavs" a few hours before every game. He may have even fired off a few e-mails to David Stern.

The emphasis is that Cuban is avoiding the spotlight. The only exception was to accept the Western Conference trophy. His mainly thanked the crowd, then offered up the rallying cry, "We ain't done yet."

Cuban refuses to explain why he's taken this tact. If anyone in the organization knows the story, they're not saying.

Heat forward Udonis Haslem, one of two holdovers from the '06 Miami team, offered his speculation: "It's five years ago and he's probably learned from that experience. He's moved on and he just wants this team to have the best opportunity to win."

Caron Butler not cleared but still optimistic

MIAMI – Caron Butler not only hopes that he can play in the NBA Finals, but he’s confident he could pick up where he left off before rupturing his right patellar tendon on New Year’s Day.

“I’d be myself,” Butler said. “I’d be myself out there – a guy that can create, do some things on the low post, obviously just make other guys better.”

Unfortunately, the Mavs’ medical staff doesn’t share Butler’s optimism.

Butler still hasn’t been cleared for contact. Coach Rick Carlisle continues to say that it’s “unlikely” that Butler will play in the Finals, although Carlisle adds that he wouldn’t bet against the small forward.

The Mavs’ playoff run has been a bittersweet experience for Butler. He’s proud of his teammates and has been touched by them dedicating the postseason to him. But Butler is an intense competitor with a burning desire to contribute less than five months after suffering a serious injury and undergoing surgery.

“I know how to put things in perspective and just understand that, no matter what I do, I still have to be cleared,” said Butler, who spent the weekend in Washington, D.C. to be with his grandmother after she had a kidney transplant. “It’s frustrating, and it’s not like AAU. It’s not like [I can just say], ‘I can give it a shot.’ It’s one of those things where there’s a chain of command. You’ve got to go through the right people to get cleared.

“I’ve just got to continue to work hard and pray for the best.”
