IMO nothing beats the GSD. Its the smartest guard dog used ever since WWII or maybe earlier than the date suggests.

GSD, DOB, ROTT, BELGIAN MAL, DACHSHUND, JAP SPITZ, MINI PIN, CHIHUAHUA, GREAT DANE, PITBULL ..and the list goes on. even askal do make good alert dogs. After all it all depends on the owner's needs and which breed matches best his/her lifestyle. Just be cautious when choosing medium and large working and herding breeds since most have high prey drive and small kids excites them, thats where socialization and owner handling plays a major difference from a good guard dog from a dangerous guard dog. Genes also make a lot of difference some are more stable while some are poorly bred. Take a look at the temperament of both parents when choosing to buy a pup. Nervous parents will most likely produce nervous pups.
