@mcdcebu: I'm not a pro but based on experience

In-camera

1) Expose correctly, e.g., the exposure indicator should fall at +2 when metering off a white t-shirt, -2 off black hair

2) Use a lens hood although modern lenses have good coating but it wouldn't hurt to have the hood on

3) Unless it's deliberate, try not to shoot against the sun (again if your lens has excellent coating, this is not relevant)

4) If it can be helped, try to find a scene that doesn't have extreme blacks and whites. If in doubt, expose for the whites since you can save the shadows but not blown out whites.

Post-processing

I don't do much post-processing but I use the Curves to improve contrast.

Lens

There are just some lenses that give you 'magic' - color, sharpness, contrast. I guess Nikon's Nano, Canon's L, and other brands' equivalent lenses would give you the contrast you need without too much effort.

Note though that medyo uso run low-contrast images so contrast is basically just like sharpness, depends whether you want less, just right, or more of it.
