To those who have a DS, this topic is for you. So post anything with regards to the system.
For starters, which is better the original DS or the DS lite?
Games, Games, and more Games?
Accessories?
What to watch out when buying a DS?

Alright, let's get the ball rolling.
If you don't have a DS yet definitely go for the DS Lite, it's smaller, sexier, and the improved backlighting alone (no more washed out colors, the screen's even brighter than the PSP) is worth it. If you've got a vanilla DS think about ditching it for a DS Lite.
When getting a DS Lite just check for dead pixels, that's probly all you need to worry about.
Homebrew :
You will need a passcard device (such as Max Media Launcher or Passkey) as well as a memory card adapter (M3, Supercard, etc) to play homebrew, and of course dirty, illegal ROMS. There are a bunch of emulators (NES, SNES, even SCUMMVM), as well as some apps for you to play around with (check http://ds.qj.net ). I wish the homebrew scene was as active as the PSP homebrew scene though, that's one of the few things i missed with my PSP. However all DS ROMS and GBA ROMS are pretty much guaranteed to play with most adapters, so instead of having to futz around with firmware downgrades you just copy over your ROMS and play away.
One thing to watch out for, the quality of your memory card (SD, CF, miniSD) will matter, if you can go for the more expensive, but faster ones, as some games might crash if the access times for the memory cards is too slow.
thanks dude you really made my days,
now for my follow up question... how much would the ds lite, passkey and super card would cost me? para maka prepare ko sa akoa budget ,kay lisod nga magpataka ta.
salamat sa pag tubag.
Chronus really know's a lot of stuff. I was thinking of getting one soon. As of the moment the DS lite costs at $129 here in the US (it has the same price as the PS2 )
So far the very click games I've noticed for the DS is the New Super Mario Bros and Starfox command. I'm still trying to do some more research on this before I get one.
Thanks Chronus!
@CHRONUS
sir , pila dapat akoa i budget para maka palit ko ug ds lite ,passkey ug memory card adapter
np guys .
passkey = P1000 - 1500
m3 miniSD =P 3000
miniSD 1gb = P 1500 - 1800
DS Lite = P 9000
Approx. 15-16k total
These prices are from the Maze in Ayala (they have supercard + passkey available there), they generally have great prices over there. Also check out mediaspot in Banilad, that's where I got my stuff.
New Super Mario Bros. is a lot of fun, nothing really new but its nice to have a fresh Mario platformer (and not another rehash from past consoles). It's a little on the easy side though. Brain Training has been surprisingly fun, and Animal Crossing is great for playing in 10-20 minute bursts a day. Starfox Command is getting good reviews (haven't tried it yet), and of course there are a crapload of DS and GBA games for last year (Castlevania, Mario Kart, Advance Wars DS, Trauma Center, etc. etc.)
@chronnus
You quoted m3 miniSD so I assume you're using a m3 miniSD
I'm using a Supercard miniSD and a kingmax 1GB miniSD (don't know the speed) and I'm getting slowdowns and slow loadtimes with some software. How's the performance with your m3?
What's the speed and brand of your miniSD card?
Oh and if you want a great fighting game, get Bleach DS :mrgreen:
To answer firebase's questions
Get the DS Lite, I'm sure you'll regret it if you get the DS Phat. Battery life, size, and screen brightness would be the advantages.
Get a Hori screen protector. The touch screen could get scratched with some stylus heavy games (i.e. Nintendogs, Brain Age, Metroid Prime)
Also get a thumbstrap which functions as a stylus if you can find one. Some games are better played using your fingers with touchscreen and some games are actually designed for your fingers to be used on the touchscreen.
@chronus
thanks sir!!
