how to remove odor on shoes

recently we embarked on an outdoor activity, and we have to make some river crossings along the way and my shoes got soaked in water..problem is when i arrived home, it started to smell bad, i washed it..then hang it dry under the sun but the odor still persist, is there anything that can be applied, a gel, a spray or anything to remove the odor?
