DRESSED in their Star Wars outfits, a lawyer and a hotel receptionist tied the knot yesterday in the San Fernando Rey Parish in Liloan, Cebu.
Atty. Christian Bacus, 32, and Pamela Adriano-Bacus, 27, who also had their civil marriage rites three years ago, showed up for their altar date dressed as Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, the film series’ main characters.
“I’m a fanatic of Star Wars,” said Christian, who teaches law at the University of Southern Philippines. “We wanted our wedding to be unique. And many would be able to relate to Star Wars because it contains several genres.”
The wedding’s entourage, all dressed in Star Wars outfits, walked down the red carpet with sound and visual effects that made the guests clap in excitement. The bride walked down the aisle escorted by two Imperial storm troopers.
“We call Chris ‘Bubot’ because he has loved robots ever since. He’s been collecting Star Wars toys since he was a child,” said Marites Villasante, a cousin of Chris.
Chris and Pamela’s “galactic sponsors” included Rep. Ramon “Red” Durano VI (Cebu, 5th district) and Provincial Board Members Jude Thadeus Sybico and Agnes Magpale. Msgr. Sindolfo Iriarte officiated.
“The wedding was fun,” said Chris’s youngest sister Pamela May Bacus, who revealed that her brother has a large collection of Star War toys and other items. “It was very exciting.”
Daniel Villasante, one of the padawans or the bearers, said he enjoyed his futuristic look. “I’m excited about the fencing,” he said, displaying his replica of a light saber.
Star Wars, conceived by George Lucas, is an American film series that has become a worldwide pop culture phenomenon since its first release in 1977.
“We met at a time when there were so many problems,” said Chris. “But we had an instant connection.”
In Star Wars, the relationship between Padme and Anakin ends badly. Anakin turns to the dark side because he is fooled into believing it will save Padme’s life. (Anakin later becomes the series’ antagonist, Darth Vader.)
Although they patterned their wedding after Star Wars, Chris is optimistic the marriage will end differently. “Ours will have a happy ending,” he said.
