for the cleaning thing, i usually take the keyboard apart. i will remove the PCB on the upper right and the plastic that has the contacts. so, that leaves me with the back cover, front cover and buttons. i also pull out the buttons, just make sure you know where to place them back. then i soak it with powdered soap (tide, ariel and etc. feel free to choose whatever you like.) for about 20 min. then rinse it thoroughly and dry it before putting it back together. i've been doing this for the past 3 yrs. well, it works for me.

for the paint thing.. hhmmm... i think it would be better to buy a new keyboard... but that is just me.

don't use paint to restore the markings on the keys... use stickers (ang keyboard sa laptop kay sticker man ang gigamit). makapalit ka ani sa national bookstore or any _big_ store selling school supplies.

or you can try using a template & fine-tipped markers kung ganahan ka c",)

or just like the others said, just buy a new keyboard (and sell the old one to fund the purchase of the new one)

@llou80: soap and water works for me... the secret is clean more often para dili kaayo hugaw everytime you clean, hence no need for cleaning agents... what i did: i bought a black keyboard so dili problema kung mulagom more than a year na akong black keyboard and all i did was to brush and blow the dust away c",) c",)
