    Default Generic Netbook at UNITOP

I was just at Unitop in downtown, and I saw and tested a generic netbook labeled "JOYO". According to it's system information, it had the following specications:

    Atom processor
160G HDD (partioned 30G for OS and program files and 130G for my documents)
    1G RAM
Windows XP OS (not certain what version)
peripherals comparable to most netbooks (3 USB, and other ports, no card reader)
    no optical drive
    10.1" screen size
the box contained one unlabeled CD, possibly drivers, and no reinstallation CD for the OS
no other information or specifications available

priced at Php 15,500.00, gi hangyo nako og Php 14,000.00 (but I didn't bought it). Sorry but I didn't get a photo of it.

When I turned it on, I noticed the screen had a similar resolution to the HP Mini 1000 (i have one), and it booted in less than a minute. It has a touchpad and the body was hard plastic.

Has anybody else saw this and/or bought one? How is it's performance, and more importantly, reliability and durability.

I've read a lot about China producing a lot of generic netbooks based on the Atom processor. Of course, since you get what you are paying for, I am kindda wary but extremely curious about the "JOYO". I expect the price to go down to perhaps the Php 10,000.00 range, thus a lot of people might be interested in getting one. Will this be like the China phones that has durability problems ?

    Comments please.

hahaha...sorry but i cant help. i really think its funny.

    on topic:

i dont trust anything from china (aside from those made by well known companies)... call me pessimist but im only influenced by the stigma they got from all their crappy and possibly deadly products .

if ur going to buy THAT netbook for 15k, i think its a total waste of ur money. aside from not knowing what the quality is, once its broken ul probably find it hard to get it fixed. and then comes warranty issues. you might end up spending more than what you bargained for.

and to top it all off, you can actually get netbooks around that price range from a more reliable brand. i saw an HP netbook that only cost 17k more or less.

I read about the manufacture of inexpensive "generic" netbooks in China last December in a Yahoo advisory. These units were meant for use in China but everybody expected it to be sold in third world countries. I asked about this in Divisoria and Greenhills a few months ago but it hasn;t arrived yet back then.

Based on the selling trend of generic chinese products, this generic netbook would most probably settle at around the php 10,000 price range, making it very attractive to those with a tight budget and to students who require basic computing needs. It will also certainly make an impact on branded computer sales. Generic fullsize laptops has also been produced in China for several years already, and it will eventually reach our shores.

I really don't have any intention to buy...na intriga lang dyud ko. and with their pricing, many with lesser knowhow on electronics will be tempted to buy. I actually have an HP Mini 1000 to complement my IBM X60s and desktop. A column in Laptop magazine reported the other month that sales of Netbooks will be around the 25 million units mark for this fiscal year with over 60% of that in third world countries, thus my interest on Netbooks in the market.

My mom happens to own one of those netbooks that costed around 10k. It's still working up to now but she's hard headed that she bought it even though I am totally against it. I even explained to her the risks, especially the warranty. But moms as usual, matuman ang gusto bahalag si kinsa ang mabangaan. Oh well, not my loss.

Warranty lang gyud ang I-consider ninyo above anything else. It doesnt matter if mahal, nindot ug specs or cute tan-awon. Warranty gyud unahon.
