Which Social-Media Tribe Are You?

Social media, that most absorbing of time-fillers that's only ever a swipe away, has come to dominate how we communicate - and for some more than others. Here, after an honest, but anonymous, poll in the Vogue office, we break down the varying breeds of users out there - from overzealous hashtaggers and oversharers, to those that opt out entirely.
The Lurkers
These are users that never comment, never “like”, never post and never admit to your face that they’ve checked out your page, yet seem to know an awful lot of only-social-shared information.
The Hashtaggers
This user #cantresisttheurge to #tageverything they share, giving everything from their #designercamera , to their #mood , to their #location a mention. They’re #sorrynotsorry and it isn’t always #instagood .
The Privates
They don’t follow many people and they don’t have many followers either – but that’s the way they like it. They just want to share baby photos, political literature and beautiful holiday selfies with their nearest and dearest all over the world.
The Oversharers
Some people have either never heard – or haven’t grasped – the concept of TMI. Nothing – from test results and passport details to bank balance and semi-dressed/naked selfies – is off limits with this tribe. They want you to know it all.
The Passive Aggressors
You know those people that “like, really aren’t the kind of people to ever put something like this on social media” – but then do? A lot? They also share pictures of wallpaper/ rugs/ beautiful vistas when they really want you to notice their manicure/ new trainers/ diamond ring.
The Novices
We all know that when Facebook asks, “What's on your mind?” you don’t have to actually tell them, right? Apparently not everyone. They also are yet to fully get that abbreviations are more of an occasional time saver, not an every-post must.
The Addicts
A quick scan around on the morning commute will identify the avid users, but when that spills over into starting every conversation with, “Did you see on Instagram?...”; calling people they’ve just met by their @ tag; and getting/giving updates at every given opportunity, a new tribe is formed.
The Perfectionists
There’s never a dreary day for this tribe – nor is there a lacklustre, boring or uneventful one either. They live in a permanent state of brilliant things happening, while wearing beautiful outfits, as seen in their perfectly cropped and flatteringly filtered images.
The Party Planners
What did this tribe ever do before they could “invite all” to an event or tick for attendance and let their devices sync up? Picking up a phone isn’t an option any more, and a postal invitation “will take a year”.
The Non-Conformists
Showing a will of cast iron, this tribe has resisted the overwhelming temptation to sign up and share. A confident move say some, although (as one Vogue staffer pointed out from personal experience) if you didn’t get the memo, you’re home alone.
The Business Minds
HAVE YOU HEARD? Building a brand identity has never been so easy and this tech-savvy tribe are using their social media to engage, interact and get their message across on every platform.
The Friends Reunited
Enter our most loyal tribe – those that “are only on Facebook to stay in touch with uni’ friends” or people they no longer see every day but “still want to see what they’re up to”. As a result, they tend to have thousands of followers and “friends”.
