Caught in the Hype

(Disclaimer: I am not an advertiser. I don't promote any products neither was I paid for such an endeavor. Any mention of products in this blog is intended to prove a point and not to promote such product.)
Picture this: Someone posts an image on Facebook with the picture of the latest crazed chocolate with this caption: "Only four left. Glad to have bought the last 4 four pieces."
Among the types of propaganda devices (testimonial, emotional words, card stacking), the bandwagon propaganda technique has been gaining sales recently. I must commend advertisers for coming up with such a marketing strategy. The strategy, "word of mouth" could not even compare to this prolific campaign. What with people posting comments on Facebook and the rest of the "bandwagoners'" (term coined) hands get itchy and the next thing is history (confectioner's sales shoot up, to the chagrin of local brands who can't even compete with this hype).
This craze (like its term) has its downside though. Well, it may serve it purpose of "trending" the product, the craze (like one's madness for movies deconstructed from bestselling novels) could die down eventually, as if it never existed at all. The challenge, therefore, is how to let the craze stay afloat. When the intoxication (because it is literally what's sweeping the masses around) of that brand dies down, we all find ourselves with empty pockets and disillusioned spirits. On the upside, (if it's food), we get a taste of our own curiosity as it settles down in our bellies (complete with the realization that we have been carried away to some extent and have proven ourselves downright gullible for even allowing ourselves so.)
If ever I do decide (to quench my curiosity) to eat that chocolate one day, I will never publicize it. I'm only trying it for the heck of it. And that when someone asks, I could quip, with much gusto, "Yeah, I tried it, " without so much ado. Besides, it is already getting the popularity that it so wanted to accomplish in the first place.
