A new Miss Cebu was crowned late Wednesday night as University of the Philippines Cebu Political Science student Cheriemel Diane Muego was named as the pageant’s winner, emerging victorious in stunning fashion over crowd-favorite, 1st runner-up Eva Psychee Patalinhug, at the Pacific Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Miss Cebu was celebrating its 30th anniversary and did so with a night full of glitz and glamour, with feature performances from notable Cebuano artists such as Annette Osmena, the K-Boyz, Pierro Vergara, the group “Artist Ko” and designer/musician Kate Torralba and the appearance of some of the pageant’s winners since its start back in 1983 to the present.
The pageant celebrates the Cebuana as a woman of not just style but substance as well and that was what Cheriemel embodied as she wowed the judges with her confidence and grace during the final question and answer portion.
The final question was a daunting one as it asked the finalists to say what they can do to inspire the victims of the recent super-typhoon Yolanda.
But the Ormoc City-born Cherimel, looking resplendent in a Wendell Quisido-creation, was unfazed as she answered with passion, “I believe that I have already started even if I’m not yet Miss Cebu. In my own way, I have contributed in sparking volunteerism. I believe that power is in the collective and it is only when we march forward in unison that we can achieve our goals, that we can inspire others, that we can give hope for the people to rise again.”
That answer eventually led her to be named as the new Miss Cebu over Eva, the 19-year old registered nurse who swept the night’s special awards, including the Kapamilya Star of the Night, Miss Friendship, Miss Photogenic and the Best in Evening Gown with hers being done by Ditas Rodriguez.
Completing the court was 2nd runner-up Hannah Marie Gore, 3rd runner-up Grace Anne Marie Yap and 4th runner-up Crystal Star Aberasturi.
The night started with an upbeat opening number that highlighted the 80s edition of the pageant, then known as Miss Cebu Tourism. The contestants danced in the black-and-white creations of Rei Escario, Mique Yapching, Alejandro “Hadji” Godinez, Humberto “Rey” Villegas, Peewee Senining and Brian Aloquin.
They also featured the shimmering collections of Yvonne Quisumbing, William Manahan, Protacio and Edwin Ao which played around the pageant’s concept of “mother of pearl.” Other highlights of the evening were the evening gown portion, dubbed as “Lustre.”
