• CPDRC Dancing Inmates

CPDRC. Just a bunch of letters that, when linked together, is the acronym for Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center. To some Cebuanos and Filipinos, it is the maximum-security prison in Cebu. But to the rest of the world? It is the home of the sensational dancing inmates.
Seeing the dancing inmates live was simply awesome and breathtaking: the YouTube videos paled in comparison. Everything was in perfect coordination and was so well rehearsed that surely, a lot of effort was involved to be able to deliver such performances. The energy level was so high and the feeling of happiness was just so contagious, it filled the entire center.

To give proper credit to our host, iSTORYA.NET was blessed with the chance to see the dancing inmates live alongside Governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia, Cebu’s very own lady governor, who was celebrating her birthday on that day, October 12, 2011. As a treat from the CPDRC inmates, who she never fails to spend time with during her birthday and who hold a special place in her heart, several song and dance numbers (some occurring during the most delightfully unexpected moments) were prepared:

      • Presentation of Colors - We Are The Champion and Heal The World
      • Prayer
      • Message from the Representative of the Council of Leaders
      • Bisaya Birthday Song
      • Grand Entrance of Colors – Do The Hustle
      • Tribute to Michael Jackson – Billy Jean
      • Dance Number 2 - Feeling Hot Hot Hot
      • Dance Number 3 - Party Rock (Yes, they were shuffling!)
      • Governor Garcia’s Favorite Song - Buttercup
      • Grand Finale - You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re Mine

The dancing inmates have truly revolutionized the meaning of the word “rehabilitation”. What started with the simple insertion of music and choreographed dancing into the inmates’ daily exercise, it is now a worldwide phenomenon that showcases the inmates’ discipline, friendliness, respectfulness and willingness to help each other. Not only were the inmates able to eliminate boredom and loneliness through dance but while serving their time, they were able to produce something so beautiful, through which they can regain their self-esteem.

iSTORYA.NET is truly proud to be Cebuano. We salute the dancing inmates as they have brought dignity and pride not just to themselves but to the entire Cebu province.
