  1. Two Chairs

    Dust permeates through
the crevices of the wooden chair
    Like roots of plants, gently
    percolating through passageways
    deep within the moist earth.

The crevices seemed to have multiplied
while I was imprisoned in oblivion
Totally caught unaware with the inevitable
    elusiveness of time.

How long has it been since I last saw
    iridescent traces of you?

  2. There'll Be No Sunshine (And Other Water-Proof Musings)

I can't exactly recall when I last bathed in the rain. I remember as a young child how I would wait for the gutter on our roof to serve as the water course for rainwater. In my young mind, it resembled those showers in the bathroom which at that time only the affluent were lavishly using. When May came and drizzles started to grace the parched earth with a refreshing taste of rain, I would await rain days with much gusto, like a little kid who is excited to open her only birthday gift.

  3. On Sandwiches

A student of mine was beaming with pride as she handed me their product: a sandwich with wheat bread and somewhat pricey fillings of ham, cheese and lettuce. In cooking class, they were taught how to make sandwiches and to sell them at a price that is approximately equivalent to the money they put up for buying the ingredients.

I accepted the sandwich and coyly asked her how much they earned for the project. "Teacher, we earned Php 540," she happily exclaimed. Curiously I ...

  4. Stumbling Along the Movie Lane

I've been watching reruns of Regal Shocker horror movies lately and I couldn't help laughing at the somewhat primitive graphic effects and what would be considered "lousy" horror stunts at present. I was laughing not only because of its crude material but that I remembered how much terrified I was as a young child when those movies were shown.

I remembered how my brother and I would hide under the bed sheet covers when that "tyanak" (monster baby) appears on screen ...

  5. Paki-Step the Brake, Manong

A close friend of mine recalled nights ago how one incident inside the jeepney gave her stomach muscle cramps the whole night from too much laughing (I might be exaggerating here but she did appear so swept away by it.)

Some nights ago, an old man rode the jeepney she was also riding. When the jeepney rounded at Sanciangko Street, the old man reached inside his pocket for coins but couldn't find one. So he handed the other passengers a bill and added, "Palihug ko. (To the driver ...

  6. The Day Cupid Died

I wish I could wait for Valentine's Day to post this blog but I can't since I don't celebrate it since years back.

I don't remember exactly the day I met Cupid but I do remember that I had liked this particular boy one time. I was in elementary (Wait, don't get me wrong. It was just a harmless crush.) and he was a classmate of mine who was always on top of our class. He stood one time when asked by my teacher to answer a math problem. Math, being my waterloo was something he solved ...

  7. From UK with Love

An aunt wouldn't accept my hand-me-downs because they came from "ukay." I kept reasoning with her (like a merchant who hasn't had sales for the day) that though they were "preloved" items, they are for sure branded and therefore of good quality. I also made mention that I really have good taste in clothes for she would not have asked hand-me-downs from me. I was fuming mad later on when at the height of my explanation, she said, "I'd rather buy the Taiwanese kind rather ...
